Obama Signs ‘Honoring Veterans and Caring For Military Families’ Legislation

In remarks during the signing of the “Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012,” President Obama stated that he believes that all Americans feel we have a moral, sacred duty towards our men and women in uniform. Furthermore, that they protect our freedom, that it is our obligation to do right by them and that this bill takes another important step in fulfilling that commitment.

The White House Statement:

First, the new law offers extended care to a group of servicemembers who were based at Camp Lejeune with their families during a period when contaminated water caused major medical issues for a number of individuals.

Among those standing with the President at today’s bill signing were Jerry Ensminger, a Marine Corps veteran who has been an advocate for affected families, and Mike Partain, who was born at Camp Lejuene and later developed male breast cancer. The bill the President signed was named after Janey Ensminger, the Master Sergeant’s daughter who passed away from leukemia at age nine.

Second, the law prohibits protests at military funerals in the two hours immediately prior to and following a military funeral — a measure, the President said, that will ensure that our servicemembers get laid to rest with “the utmost honor and respect.”

President Obama upheld this bill as an example of the type of issue on which Republicans and Democrats can find common ground, and he pushed lawmakers to take action on other measures to aid veterans — including his proposal for a Veterans Jobs Corps.

Interesting how we create huge exemptions for the military when it comes to socialism eh? Of course we never, ever hear the political right refer to it as such do we. And I suppose it would be unfair to make that observation without mentioning the flip side of the coin, namely the vast and hugely profitable military industrial complex. Apologies for the digression, all the recent Orwellian talk has me looking through that lens more than usual lately.

Military organizations are always socialist (at least in the sense of social networking and support) if they are to be effective. The Romans defeated Boudica’s much larger Celtic forces because they acted as a military (meaning disciplined and organized) unit instead of the free-swinging Celts who simply descended on the last Roman legion in Britain with reckless abandon.

“President Obama stated that he believes that all Americans feel we have a moral, sacred duty towards our men and women in uniform. Furthermore, that they protect our freedom, that it is our obligation to do right by them….”

What a bunch of double talk cr@p.Read the following.

How can you be so fired up to support our military and then take the same people to court to restrict their voting ability.

Bet if the military voted overwhelmingly like the blacks and hispanics that are against voter ID laws that this case would never have made it to court. B.O. would have been on the other side supporting their voting rights.

Obama is NOT trying to restrict their voting. That is a Republican lie. He is trying to extend the voting rights (back) to all the voters of Ohio. Ohio used to allow anyone to have the rights that now only military personnel have. The DNC and administration are not trying to take away the rights of the military personnel. They are suing to extend that right to the rest of the population (as it used to be).

Sorry RP, but you really need to get the facts straight.

    That is a Republican lie.

And that is a redundancy. ;-)

Guess it is all in your political views. I would not call ABC news a right wing conspiracy and this article presents the info in a balanced way.

From my standpoint, you do nothing that impacts the military and if the Ohio law gives the military benefits that others do not have, so be it. They are the ones that are dieing so others can live in freedom.

As for the Ohio law that closes off voting for others before Saturday, this is no different than other states that close early voting before Monday preceeding the general election. NC closes on November 3rd.

I have no problem with Ohio closing the voting on Nov 1st, 2nd or whatever and leaving it open for the military until Monday. They earned that right by volunteering to service this country!

    You said:

“How can you be so fired up to support our military and then take the same people to court to restrict their voting ability.”

Please explain how the military’s voting ability is “restricted.”

    Thanks Rcoutme, Dorian, and zepher.

I read RP’s “FoxNews talking point” yesterday and just shook my head. I held off commenting because I knew that he’d just dig in, facts-be-damned, if I did. And reading his reply to you it appears that is what happened.

When a commenter who at times really seems to pay attention starts linking to ‘humanevents.com’ and the first thing there is a FoxNews video I have to pass and right it off to what happens to almost moderates with heavy wing-nut leanings. :)

Here’s a link to the specific article at Snopes.com titled: “Why Ohio?” It totally puts to rest the right-wing talking point that RP is basing his position on.

Let me add to the “Thanks Rcoutme, Dorian, and zepher,” thanks SteveK.

Hopefully the right wing lie has now been exposed, totally discredited and forever buried…but you never know how these lies can be “resurrected” in different garb.

It is good this is now signed and their can be greater assistance to our Vets..they have spent their time in hell…They are willing to give their lives, their limps, their sanity, and come home to an economy with few opportunities. I do not call this socialist but barest of decency.

I do not call this socialist but barest of decency.

The two are hardly mutually exclusive.
