CNN Plays “Stupid Girls” To Intro Palin Piece

Jul 30, 2012 by

Eight months ago Jimmy Fallon had Michele Bachmann on his show. As she walked out to join the show, the house band played “Lyin’Ass Bitch.” Edgy humor? Poor taste? Sexist crap? Depends on your perspective I suppose. But, at least Fallon fancies himself a comedian, not a serious news source. That excuse doesn’t work for CNN.

The self-proclaimed nonpartisan 24 hour news channel did a piece yesterday on Sarah Palin’s support for Chick-fil-A. The segment opened with an overlay of Pink’s song “Stupid Girls.”

Don’t get me wrong, I like Pink. She’s got attitude. But, “Stupid Girls” is an anthem to rebellion from the bimbo mold that borders on pornographic in its depiction of its title characters, Stupid Girls. The song is powerful, but to compare Sarah Palin to the Stupid Girls, as CNN seemed to do, includes references in the song to Stupid Girls acquiescing in all manner of sexual behavior, including violent oral sex. Here are the lyrics .

CNN says its use of the song was an unintentional mistake. Well, maybe, but for all on the left who say the political bile mostly comes from the right,…

CNN claims to be centrist. Most everything on their programming says otherwise. That is why the CEO is leaving and they are far behind Fox News and MSNBC in ratings.

One has the right of center viewers and one has the left of center viewers that watch cable news.

This unintentional mistake was about as much a mistake as Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction.

Just another sad example of how far a once great news network has fallen in their attempts to maintain viewership and relevance. Clearly at some point, they saw the numbers FOX News was pulling in and decided to abandon their award winning business model to pander. What they sadly don’t realize is there is a much smaller audience for sensationalist editorializing amongst the moderates, independents, and “The Left”, whatever that is today, than there is for such a thing among conservatives. Trying to out-FOX FOX news is never going to work.

Yep, that’s pretty crappy, all right. The sexist piece here isn’t that there is a wide-spread understanding that Palin is a few crayons short of a full box. She is. It’s that there are so, so many men in leadership positions who are every bit as incompetent, every bit as damaging in their policy ideas, every bit as eccentric and quirky, and these guys are somehow taken seriously by the country and the media.

Call out the stupid when you see it, media, but not only if it’s a woman. Women are severely underrepresented in our country’s government, and let’s just say that the amount of stupid needed to get us where we are now is way too huge to all be coming from a small handful of lady leaders you love to pick on.

Sadly, I _still_ give CNN decent marks for centrism because the bar has just dropped _so_ far that even a half-assed attempt makes you stand out. I’ve been reading USA today some. Its not a great paper, but it seems one of the least partisan ones out there.

I’m reminded of the Chris White video controversy at Fox News. The difference being that Fox owned up the fact that it *was* an editorial comment, although an unapproved one. The explanation that this was coincidental, while I can’t say it’s not conceivable, is a stretch to say the least. CNN should hold itself to higher standards. I agree with David that CNN is usually decent in terms of non-partisan coverage.

Roro, I agree that there is a sexist slant to this, but I disagree that a hard journalist should point out who is competent/intelligent and who is not. Just report what they say and do and let us decide.

I watched Reliable Sources 2 weekends ago and they showed a clip from CNN’s Erin Burnett:

Mitt Romney is running on his business expertise. His tax returns are a relevant window into how he conducts his business affairs. If he refuses to release them, it is because: one, he had a lot more money in tax shelters in prior years than he does now. Two, he did something shady. Or three, he’s stupid.

So CNN is willing to suggest that Republicans of either sex are stupid. Burnett did hasten to add that she didn’t think Romney was stupid. The trouble is that so many of these media types blur the line between reporting and opinion, and CNN seems to be sliding further towards opinion.

That’s exactly my point about CNN these days. They have really added a lot of editorializing to their format. While that may make for more entertaining broadcasts, its not actual news which is what CNN became known for. Or perhaps I am not remembering the CNN of the 90′s as accurately as I should.

This has been going on for a while thought it has continued, and gotten worse, lately. I remember 20 years ago when networks were advertizing how they provided “analysis” (ie their opinion about what it meant) as part of their news.

One result is a blurring of fact and opinion. That is why politics today features people labelling things that don’t match their opinions as “lies” while spinning their version of the “truth” to match their opinions.
