National Coming Out Day, an annual event sponsored by HRC and GLSEN, is next Thursday, October 11, 2007. Maybe that’s why Senator Larry Craig has announced that he will not resign from the US Senate even though his Minnesota guilty plea to attempted bathroom sex has not been dismissed.
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) has changed his mind about resigning and will remain in the Senate through next year. His decision comes on the same day a Minnesota judge ruled Craig could not withdraw his guilty plea to disorderly conduct in a men’s restroom at a Minnesota airport.
Craig had previously said he would resign if he could not withdraw his guilty plea and take the matter to a full trial.
If he came out as a gay man in public next Thursday (and then resigned for his toilet stall scandal) he might be able to do some good not only for himself but also for a lot of frightened young men.
I ask again, where is the proof he is gay? Since he is married, it seems much more likely that he’s bi.
Well bi, straight or gay we do know his word is meaningless and that he doesn’t care about his party at all.
I don’t care what his sexuality consists of, or whether he comes out, stays in the closet, or moves to Hawaii.
His see-saw announcements are becoming irritating, however.
He’s resigning. He’s not resigning. He’s resigning if the judge doesn’t let him withdraw the guilty plea,
No, he’s not resigning then either.
How can his constiuents stomach this?
He takes back everything he says, so what does anything he says mean?
And the chances of this happening are….slim? None?
Certainly if he did this (and then made it his business to advance Gay rights even if it was out of office) he’d make up for his hypocrisy and he’d send a very good message, but this is basically a pipe-dream. It doesn’t look at all like he’s even accepted his orientation to himself, let alone is ready to face it in public. I understand the reactions of people, but frankly more than Craig himself, the reaction to this incident probably hurts those “frightened young men” more. If you’re caught you will be ridiculed, you’ll be reviled, you’ll be publicly humiliated. I wouldn’t count on them fully understanding that it needn’t be the same for them.
ps: I just want to take the time to agree with Entropy. Empirical data suggests he’s bisexual, since he has relationships with both sexes. Of course he could be Gay, he’d hardly be the first married closet homosexual, but articles about him, certainly official ones, should at least include the possibility of him being bisexual, to be rigorous.
Craig knows his constituency would probably never tolerate an openly gay or bi Senator, which accounts for his bizarre backpedaling. Idaho is not Massachussetts. He appears to be trying desperately to save face in his private life- regardless of how incredible his public statements may be.
Craig must be well aware, at least on some level, of how isolated and ineffective he will be if he remains in the Senate, where he has already received the kiss of death from Minority Leader McConnell. It is difficult to believe he likewise was not fully aware of the potential career-ending consequences of a guilty plea .
The same capacity for denial that enabled Craig to live as a closeted gay/bi? man while publicly espousing conservative anti-gay ideology, and then enabled his incredible account of the events surrounding his arrest at the Minneapolis airport, is now allowing him to take this tone-deaf posture about clearing his name while effectively representing Idahoans.
Whether or not he stays should not be about the misdemeanor itself, but rather his actions since Roll Call broke the story, actions which indicate a tragic dearth of character, and a limitless capacity for self-delusion.
It will be interesting to see if Idahoans accept Craig’s new “stance” or start demanding his immediate resignation!
Forget bisexual Entropy. He’s married and all of his kids are adopted, he’s cruising for tail in airport restrooms, he’s whats known in the gay community as “on the down low”. Pretending to be straight so he can get the best of both worlds, and living in hell.
