You wrote <blockquote>"I fear that all these thousands will die for nothing. Things will “calm down” (as terrorized people are less noisy) and the world will awkwardly pretend nothing happened, and move on."</blockquote>

I believe I know what you might be thinking and sensing Lynx ... In our time, there's a form of agony that has become chronic for anyone who looks deeply at the world ... and doesn't look away.

But, this is just my life thought; we have to proceed as though it will only take one more small act to turn the ship hard in mid-sea. I dont think we can know precisely what and which one act or word or art or thought or event will contribute the last ounce needed for enough torque to force the turn. I just know you and a whole gaggle of thoughtful souls I've known, and those I've had the privledge to touch words with here at TMV ...we'll keep going, each in our own ways, together.

Damn, I can't find the picture anywhere! It was on some Spanish news site. All I can offer is <a href="http://www.20minutos.es/galeria/3055/0/2/" rel="nofollow">this</a> with lots of pictures of the happenings, but not the poor dead boy.

Dear Lynx if you can give me a link to the pix you saw of a chlid monk, I will run it with an update. My heart? Well broken
long ago. Is there such a thing as being left with only heart-dust?

And Domajot and Lynx, I understand. Also, many priests and nuns also in Catholic church taken to convents and semnaries long before age of majority. As you say poignantly, an issue for another time.

There are reports from defectors that the dead number in the thousands, and that hundreds of monks have been executed and their bodies hidden in the jungle, while others are being brutally beaten. I already saw a picture of the body a child monk, beaten and bloody. Bastards. The UN only sees fit to send an "envoy" when it should be sending the armed forces. Now THIS is a country that could use some force to democratize it, this is a population ready for it, these people WOULD welcome us.

Though they will never read this, I must say that I stand in awe of people who brave the bullets for their ideals.

ps: doma, I too dislike the idea of child monks, though Buddhism is not high on my list of harmful religions, but as you say, it's a conversation for another time.

I'm following the news with fear and trepidation, and I'm in awe of the courage shown by protesitng monks and ordinary citizens alike. I condemn the regime.

At the risk of introducing a discordant note, I'm not that easy with the notion of child monks. That's a subject for another, calmer time. though.

[...] Burma: Senior General, Sir: Show Us These Children Are Alive and Unharmed By Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés Posted on October 2nd, 2007 **The photograph of Burmese child monks near Lake Inle, by Eric Lafforgue whose work and words can be found here. Eric LAFFORGUE | Photographie These are child novice monks in Burma. Some have been on earth for only 6 years. Some young monks have been on earth for only 7 years. Some child monks have walked the little patch of earth around their monasteries for most of their 10 years. In this picture, they are peeking out of their monastery’s windows. There have been thousands of child monks exactly like these living, running, laughing, studying and being mischievous in the monasteries throughout Burma. At least until this week. snip themoderatevoice.com [...]
