T-Steel, Marta on the Brasilian team is something of a celebrity given the quality and style of her play. She was mentioned on NPR recently (yes, I listen to the smarmy voices on NPR Neewssssssss quite often) or you can read about her here, on a page with a few interesting other features on it.

The USA Women’s Soccer Team has been one of the best for a substantial period of time (they won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999, 3rd in 2003). They were the heavy favorite against Brasil. The Brasilian men ARE soccer. But this is the first time the Brasilian women have matched their male counterparts. I’m happy for them actually. They are a good club.

The team from the country that cares the least about soccer loses to the team from the country where soccer is a quasi-religion? Yeah, BIG shocker alright.

What is stunning, and admirable, is that the US team made it to semi-finals, which the mens team (so far as I know) never has.

Instead of blaming the coach for switching goalies, I blame the coach and players for not being up for Brasil’s challenge. The Brasilian women out-worked and out-quicked our American ladies. Plain and simple.
