Chief Justice John Roberts: ‘Judas’ Who Sold America (Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland)

How could it have happened? And why should the uninsured be forced to pay for health care they have been getting for free? For Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza, in this satirical look at the American right, columnist Mariusz Zawadzki explores the convoluted arguments for and against President Obama’s health care reform – and tries to explain to readers why right-wingers, ‘so vocal about individual freedom and taking responsibility for one’s own decisions’ – are foaming at the mouth to prevent precisely this from occurring.

For the Gazeta Wyborcza, Mariusz Zawadzki starts off this way:

“Traitor” is one of the gentler epithets being flung at Chief Justice John Roberts, after the ruling on Barack Obama’s reform of the health insurance system. On right-wing talk shows, the hosts are fuming into their microphones, shouting loudly and falling into hysterics in such an expressive way that one can almost hear them tearing their hair out by the fistful (I admit this might be an auditory hallucination, since America’s top radio guru is bald).

And all this because conservative Justice Roberts, nominated by George W. Bush, unexpectedly joined forces with four liberal justices, due to which the hated Obamacare reform has been saved by a 5 to 4 vote. This act of treason occurred during the most important Supreme Court session since at least 2000, when it decided the outcome of a presidential election.

Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana declared that the ruling is as tragic for America as the attacks of September 11 (for which he later apologized in writing). America’s hallowed freedom has been ruined by the so-called individual mandate: soon everyone will have to buy insurance or pay a penalty of 2.5 percent of one’s yearly income!

While I see the need for ‘meaningful’ health care reform in this country, it is no stretch of the imagination to realize that Obama’s taking the ‘all or nothing’ approach was a disaster and missed the intended purpose of assisting Middle Class ‘Working’ Americans with health costs and coverage.

Obama betrayed his campaign promise to reign in the pharmaceutical industry (which he brokered a deal with in that they would not be negatively impacted by Obamacare) and insurance companies (that Obamacare actually forces us to support, thus guaranteeing their undeserved support and continuance through State Capitalism). He simply betrayed working-class Americans while treating the economy as a secondary issue.

That said, Justice Roberts should be applauded for taking a decidedly non-political stance (which is supposed to be one of the main qualities of a SCOTUS justice) and voted according to law, not according to popular opinion. It is a mistake to claim that he sided with the Liberal agenda in his vote, as he has clearly stated his vote was according to already in place legal precedence and Constitutional considerations, regardless of the 4 liberal leaning justices reasons for upholding Obamacare.

Also, it’s high time the politicos, talking heads and public rise above the grass level and get above the tree tops to see that Justice Roberts vote has implications that go beyond Obamacare, in that the broader ramifications of his vote actually play into the conservative agenda in a way that time will show was masterful, if not brilliant. Remember, Justice Roberts is known for approaching law and being a justice just like a master chess player plays their game – often sacrificing a chess piece to win the game many moves later.

Chief Justice Roberts knows there are far more important cases that are going to be brought before the court that will refer back to the Obamacare ruling he so masterfully made happen that will actually work more to the favor of a conservative corporatist agenda (which he also masterfully ensconced into the law (refer to the Citizens United ruling) than is presently realized.

How is this so? Because the issue of sustaining American’s contemporary free-market commerce at all costs, that Roberts is an avowed champion of, plays into the corporatist philosophy and agenda that is very close to Roberts heart, and that is the real game Americans should be concerned about regarding the Roberts court.
