I tend to agree with the people who commented on the article who think the Catholic Church won’t schism, just grow in the parts of the Third World where it’s currently popular to live in the past and shrink in the First World where people will just leave the Church.

  2. Thank you for the link, Pat.

Funny thing. As an non-Catholic I might be led to believe that an element of the schism-in-the-making would be the international pedophilia priest scandal. But then what do I know?

SM: the international pedophilia priest scandal is not as big as you might think. Roman Catholic priests are no more likely to commit pedophilia than their counterparts in other religions. The main problem was the systematic cover-ups. Once they are addressed, the news becomes old.

As for the schism–it is somewhat unlikely. Reasons:

    1. The Church has a history of not having schisms (generally) and a HUGE support of early Church writers supporting the top-down authority.

    2. The celibacy issue is not part of doctrine (it is a church rule that IS subject to change) [Note: Doctrine and Faith are not subject to change] Female priesthood is not allowed due to Doctrine–that won’t change.

    3. As mentioned by Jim, there are already alternatives to the Roman Catholic Church (not the least of which are the Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox Churches) which have the same sacraments and basic doctrinal teachings.

Yes, I belong to a Catholic Apologetics group.
