I've had occasion to meet with the last people to speak a certain dialect. The knowledge that the dialect will die when they die was in their eyes, as evident as the sun shiining on us. Their only consolation was to meet with one another as often as possible (being old and frail, that wasn't often) for the pleasure of speaking in their own natural voice. Being the last is the loneliest place of all. It’s not often that tears result when reading blog posts, but the image of the one solitary man standing guard over his community’s past ….

I’ve had occasion to meet with the last people to speak a certain dialect. The knowledge that the dialect will die when they die was in their eyes, as evident as the sun shiining on us. Their only consolation was to meet with one another as often as possible (being old and frail, that wasn’t often) for the pleasure of speaking in their own natural voice.
Being the last is the loneliest place of all.
