I see Elrod beat me to it. The intended audience for the current political show is the hard core of the current Republican party. It does hurt Thompson with them.

Dobson's rejection of Thompson hurts him more than it helps him. Here's why. This is the GOP primary we're talking about, not the general election. By throwing cold water on his candidacy, Dobson is making it clear that neither he nor his followers will go to bat for him. So that means moderate Republicans are going to feel better about supporting him? Not really. Moderate Republicans are already to the one genuine moderate Republican in the race: Giuliani. Getting dissed by Dobson won't pull Giuliani voters away.

If Thompson does manage to get the nomination, Dobson's lukewarm support will mean Thompson will have to look to sources other than the Christian right to staff all the volunteer phone banks and do the canvassing. The Rove-Mehlman machine NEEDS major support from Christian conservatives in order to get out the vote. Without them, the GOP has no committed activists in its corner and will get smashed against a fired up Democratic electorate.

In the end, Dobson is more a benefit to Thompson than a liability, and that's why this is bad news for him.

Can Fred Thompson survive the backlash that is coming?
James Dobson gave his opinion about Fred Thompson regarding his being the moral choice for the GOP.

Dobson says NO to Fred.

Lambasted by Dobson? You have any idea how many moderate votes that just landed Thompson? That simply has to outweigh an endorsement at this point.
