I think so Doma. It doesn't have that air of "on the record" were politicians go into super safe pre-damage control mode whenever they speak. Anyways, it certainly seems they open up a bit more on such shows,

Thomson on Jay Leno's show
McCain on the Daly show.
Hagel on Maher's show.

Is comedy where we get in touch with our reality now?

I suspect Hagel grew up admiring the party of Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford and Barry Goldwater. Hagel probably saw the so-called Reagan Revolution as simply an extension of all that.

In fact, the Reagan Revolution paved the way for the party of Gingrich, DeLay, Bush, Cheney, Rove and Abramoff, of big lies and bigger hypocrisy.

Better late than never, Hagel doesn't want to be associated with them and what they've made of a once decent, competitive party. I see that as the GOP's loss, not his. He'll do well wherever he goes and at whatever he decides to do.

Altho I disagree with Hagel on a lot of other issues, he is blunt and honest about the Iraq War and the Republican Party. Its a shame he is no longer welcome there. He and John Warner have been beacons of integrity in a party that is fading fast from the lack of it.
