How the hell did Pakistan end up as our ally in this thing? Or Saudi Arabia for that matter. The fact is they are of strategic importance on matters that have nothing to do with terrorism, because they certainly aid and abet it, so we look the other way.

Musharraf has been useless in tracking down Bin Laden and eliminating the bases of the Taliban within his borders. In fact, I'd go so far as to say even obstructionist. His country would side with extremism over us any day of the week, and he has just enough control to stay in power, not enough to help us in the GWOT.

That Musharaff is a dubious ally was proved by his hands-off deal with the tribes along the Afghan border.

In a time of turmoil within the country, however, there don't appear to be any good alternatives.
Before embarking on a risky new strategy, we would at least need to see how the elections come out.

It's quite possible I'm ignorant of some basic fact in Pakistan's power structure, but how could the US deal with the militray directly, anyway? How can you bypass the government in doing so, even if that were a good thing?
It seems to me this proposal would just make a complex and difficult situation even more risku and difficult.
