What Happened Between Israel and Syria Recently? Rumors Abound.

The news that Israel conducted a flyover of Syrian territory has caused something of a diplomatic incident between the two countries. Syria has expressed strong outrage that its sovereignty was violated, and proudly claims that it effectively retaliated by hitting one of the invading planes with anti-aircraft weaponry. Israel, meanwhile, has not been forthcoming with an explanation, so rumors are rife as to what exactly the flyover was meant to accomplish.

Obviously no one REALLY knows, but now Turkey is in the act because suppossedly some empty fuel pods from the IDF incursion landed in Turkish territory. For another analysis, Daniel Levy’s ( a keen observer of the Israeli scene) blog lays out the possiblities.

Although Bolton — with his rabid, Curtis Lemay-esque desire to bomb each one of our enemies back to the stone age — is far from a reliable source on such things, both Joshua Landis (a much more thoughtful analyst) and Daniel Levy note that there may be some truth to Bolton’s assertions. Levy, for instance, notes that some sources “suggest that the US has new intelligence linking Syria with North Korea” and Landis comments that his “hunch is that some new bit of intelligence has come in” about Syria’s nuclear weapons program.

I doubt may here feel the the way about Landis, I even see him to the left of Juan Cole.
