Thompson thinks that he can be another GWB. More conservative than much of the populace but able to overcome what people would think about his actual policies because of a personality that comes across as being trustworthy. But a Thompson Presidency would be indistinguishable from the Bush presidency in all policy aspects, foreign and domestic, from what I’ve heard.

Every single major party candidate faces a primary electorate dominated by the base and a general election electorate much closer to the center. The risks Thompson faces are the same every other candidate does. And the electorate will be as forgiving, or unforgiving, to him as they are to others. Republican voters care if a candidate can’t be counted on to hold fast against the Washington culture (which they know is not their values). They don’t care whether a candidate got in 2 months later than the experts said he should.
