egrubs- I stand by the comparison. Craig had 6 weeks to decide to plead guilty and had access to the best attorneys money could buy. His reversals on the plea and on his upcoming resignation smack of desperation- a wish to hang on despite the reality of the situation.

Warner, otoh, behaved with dignity and honor by acknowleging that Virginians deserve representation by someone with more vigor than he will be able to give them. Thus he was able to face the reality of the situation with a calm determination that demonstrates real leadership.

See a tongue-in-cheek visual of Senator Craig taking a new stance...here:

The Craig v Vitter comparison is far more legitimate than the Craig v Warner.

Some of these guys never know how to let go gracefully. Contrast Craig's desperate attempt to hang on, with Sen Warner's gracious exit. Craig is thinking only of himself and his greatly diminished future out of power, while Warner thought of his constituents.

Hubris is a pre-requisite for politicians. To marvel at the novelty of a Senator going back on his word or engaging in a tawdry public theater is to ignore the last 200+ years of American hypocrisy and ledgerdemain.

I do think that Craig should just sit down and shut up, but I don't think his change of heart is pure hubris. I think he is upset that his party has thrown him under the bus, and he wants payback.

And that's not a surprising thing either.

1. He pled guilty to a misdemeanor, most likely to prevent the media circus we're seeing now.

2. He did not CONFESS to being gay, which is what you're post implies.

3. Rumor does not equal fact, no matter how juicy the gossip is.
