Most of the problems the GOP has with the Latino vote are of it’s own making. Given that republicans are missing the gene for self-examination I’m not sure how they’ll turn that around.

While Obama still enjoys the overwhelming support of the rapidly growing Latino population in the U.S. (As Michael Reagan for a change correctly suggests),there are a couple of factors that could reduce their support and turnout in the fall.

Many Latinos are disappointed with Obama’s failure to live up to his promises to overhaul immigration policies and to review the status of certain illegal immigrants .

Second, as the New York Times reports, Latinos are not registering or voting in numbers that fully reflect their potential strength.

Both possibly working to the advantage of Romney, if he handles this issue adroitly and (as, again, in one of his few lucid moments, Reagan correctly suggests) Romney would pick the brains of some GOP Latinos — or anyone’s brain but his (Romney’s that is).

And… “How did she win the New Mexico governor’s office?

Not by talking about the differences between Democrats and Republicans. Not about talking about taxes. She won by appealing to the values that Republicans and Latinos share: Who are we as a country? Where are we going?”

OK…. so lots of talk about customizing the message and appealing to shared values.

But what about policies that appeal to Latinos? What can Mitt Romney do that actually helps Latinos?

All this article says is to find shared values and talk about them. This doesn’t say anything about actually HELPING Latinos. We all have shared values and I’m sure that many of the shared values among Republicans and Latinos apply to Democrats as well.

Surprisingly astute analysis. Obviously, state and national elections have different dynamics, but Reagan is correct that Mitt has a couple of fellow Reps that might be of considerable help.
