Somewhere in the back of my mind, while laying low trying to beat the obscene SoCal heat wave, I was thinking last night… Wouldn’t it be just like Bush to show up in Iraq on Labor Day.

I don’t think the President genuinely cares about anybody but himself. The troops are props for him. He’s done nothing to improve the lives of veterans when they return to the US, and has ruined the US army. I somehow think the troops are smart enough to see through the politics of Bush’s visit.

jdledell: I’m not going to begrudge the president and his “publicity stunt.” I think he genuinely cares about the troops.

Like I said, he’s not going to be like Abe Lincoln, on the front lines, pushing his generals to get tough. But for the Commander-in-Chief to visit the troops in the field – even in the chow house – is a morale booster.

I don’t oppose this war, but I get the feeling from you that anything the president does just feeds the “war machine,” no?

I believe that the flight landed in Anbar, Baghdada IA is still unsafe. If the surge was truly working AF1 could have landed at BIA to the flowers and chocalates the pro-war architects promised as a result of the invasion. This was a “dog and pony show”, as Webb said recently, just like LBJ’s trips to Vietnam when the “students” were outside with torches and pitchforks.

Donald – Do you really think the troops morale is going to get better because the President stopped by for a few hours to meet with a VERY select group out of the 160,000? 99.9% of the troops will just be trying to stay cool. The President isn’t going to get any more of a first hand account than he does from his teleconfrences with Patreaus, Crocker et al each week. This is a publicity stunt and you know it.

I think the ultimate consumers of Bush’s visit are the troops.

Of course , the president’s not going door-to-door on patrol, but he’ll hear what’s happening first hand, and his presence will be an added boost to an ever-improving environment of morale among the ranks.

God bless him and our our fighting men and women.

To claim that a President is going to see anything for himself in a war zone is a ludicrous statement. Do they really expect anyone to believe it?
