I always have understood it to mean the ideology of a hyper-assertive (neh, aggressive?) "losing is not an option" mentality. If the idea to intervene was to truly make the world a better place, not just a better place for the guys who have graduated from running football teams to running nations, it wouldn't grate me so much. In so many ways the politics and tactics of the representatives of that group, the kristols and the wolfowitzi have been proven.dead.wrong. and destructive. Yet we have them acting with a larger voice currently with no credibility. There is no doubt that the U.S. needs to intervene in the world, we have need of resources just like every other nation, but currently we are perceived as having no soul. There is a better way for a world of people to exist together, a world that is growing smaller. Governments resorting to making claims on the territory of the poles, which according to the newscast I watched that night, was "really only symbolic". Is it? Neoconservatism is also closely aligned in my mind with dominant christianity and judaism, time-honored foils for islam. As the press of the world pushes us all closer together we have the obligation to understand and exist together and not wipe each other out to fulfill some subconscious, superstitious agenda. Its so great to be reliving the politics of the 11th century. Neo-cons are neo-cons now just like liberals are liberals, whatever you want to twist it to mean. As far as I know, Steve Clemons is pretty careful about the term as well, but for obvious reasons I don't know his work as well as I know my own.
