Quote of the Day: Bob Schieffer On the Parties’ Political Rhetoric and Centrists

May 22, 2012 by

Our political Quote of the Day comes from CBS’s Bob Schieffer, who, as I’ve said before, was really person who should have succeeded Walter Cronkite:

“But you know, I tell you something, Imus — what I find really interesting. What’s going on here, frankly, is you know, Mitt Romney, is not the robber baron that the Obama folks would have you believe any more than Obama is a European socialist as the Romney folks would have you believe.”

Schieffer went on to explain that there has been a positive coming out of this, which he said was the rise of the center.

“But, we’re in this age of these negative ads now and both sides will try you know, to appeal to the extremes of both sides and that’s where we are,” he continued. “And you know, excuse me for, you know looking for a bright side, but maybe some of the centrists in both parties now are saying, ‘Hey, let’s kind of get serious about this and get these campaigns back to appealing to the folks in the middle and not to just the folks on either side.”

Well, in fact I’ve come the conclusions that one thing both sides agree on is that they want the middle to have to choose “them or us” rather than compromise. And that leaves the middle with little choice as long as the two party system gives us only two choices.

I’ve decided I will write someone in before I vote for either a Democrat or Republican. Unfortunately, that is a symbolic gesture that is unlike to change things. Some have pushed for third parties. I’m not against that but so far attempts have foundered on a system that rigged against them. I my personal opinion we need reform such as instant run-off voting.

I’d rather have them start appealing to real world concerns, even if that means a lot of ruffled feathers. The “middle” doesn’t mean much if it’s just a watered down version of what we already have.

I basically asked the question before, and I think Schieffer has answered it. I asked if the “center” or “thinking” folks would start to ignore all partisan-sounding attacks. I guess the answer is YES!

That makes me feel a little better today.
