People are big on how enthusiastic ones supporters are because of the belief that it helps win elections. Part of this seems to be based on the standard theory partisans use for not courting the center (“we can win the election by getting our based out rather than court the center”, the line theory that carried Democrats to a loss with Kerry.) This has more to do with how well you toe the partisan line than with any ability and, in the end, ends up being another way of trying to lock into a two party system.
