Yes, the sleight of hand on the rhetoric is obvious………also note that the Dems have had to send Harry “the war is lost” Reid away from the press corp and have Nancy “those incompetent Iraqis” Pelosi take over.

Wow, what a depressing report. To think, we are responsible for all that mess and misery. Not that I didn’t know it was awful before, but to see it categorized and bulletpointed sure scrubs away some of the desensitized parts of the psyche.

  3. Sam: yes, it was not exactly a read with a happy ending so to speak.

    Casual: hah!

I would be surprised if Petraeus has much time left to assemble and document facts much different than this report, so, I would guess we are essentially reading an advance copy of the now “9/11″ report to Congress.

And, given Sam’s and Pelosi’s focus, notably passing by what many others in the blogs and media see as a somewhat encouraging report (other than the Iraqi govt. piece), this groundhog sees another 300 days of winter coming, i.e., each side will focus on the opposite conclusions, no consensus will be reached and we will have deja vu all over again.

Here’s a sample of the headline mix (hat tip QandO).

The Washington Post – Walter Pincus: “NIE Cites ‘Uneven’ Security Gains, Faults Iraqi Leaders”

The New York Times – Mark Mazzetti: “Report Raises Strong Doubt About Iraqi Government”

The Politico – Mike Allen: “Intelligence Briefers Call Iraq ‘Grave’”

The Hill – Klaus Marre: “Intelligence Report Details Ups And Downs In Iraq”

The Washington Times – Bill Gertz and S.A. Miller: “U.S. Sees Stability Expanding In Iraq”

The Houston Chronicle – Warren P. Strobel and Leila Fadel: “New Intel Analysis Gives Gloomy Forecast For Iraq”

Isn’t the key finding that the pro- Iran, pro-Syria Iraqi government may be incapable of making political progress?

  6. Sam says:

I’m sorry casual, you call that an encouraging report? /boggle
