@Barky: in your correction you wrote, "...should of said..." This would be more correct if it were, "...should have said..." or "...should've said..." Not to be super picky, but this is not a typo, and it really starts to grate on my nerves.

American politics (since Adams v Jefferson) has always been nasty. "Back in the old days..." people generally knew that any rumors they heard were likely to be unsubstantiated (or, if true, irrelevant). Due to the internet, and now especially Super PAC's, people are starting to get back to the "old days." They will soon discount most rumors.

We have two major parties, one of which is significantly more reality based than the other. Choose an issue: environment, civil rights, human rights, science, education, foreign policy, economy, energy, etc. There is no comparison. One party is slipshod, irresponsible, steeped in prejudice and superstition, tends to rush into wars, and is incapable of cooperating for the greater good. The other party, while not without a considerable amount of warts, is a grownup in comparison. There is little equivalence, despite the (continuing) popularity of the "both sides" meme.

As I just posted under the Soros article, I'm expecting the conventional wisdom of "huge PAC money ruining the election" may be bogus. I am beginning to think this money will be put in the wrong place and wasted on "old TV" ad campaigns which will be largely ineffective this time around. That medium is dying and losing its effectiveness. DVR, Roku, AppleTV, and Hulu are making TV ads worthless, and Internet advertising won't be too effective either. YouTube events and other things will become flame wars and hacktivist targets. It's all going to be about grass-roots & local events, not mass media.

I'm suggesting that this is the first Presidential campaign since Citizens United, and these new PACs won't really know how to do it right. It's sort of lime the first .com bubble: no one knew how to set up a "new economy" business model thus Fortunes were lost.

It's the NEXT Presidential election that will really be hurt by Citizen's United. By then the SuperPACs will have learned from their mistakes.

Just my own attempt to look under the "conventional wisdom rug".
