Edwards Calls Coulter ‘She-Devil’

Instead of ignoring Ann Coulter completely, John Edwards seems to have decided that attacking her might pay off (politically):

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: Former Sen. John Edwards on Friday fired the latest round in his ongoing verbal feud with Ann Coulter, calling her a “she-devil” at a public event before quickly adding that he shouldn’t engage in name-calling.

Edwards, D-N.C., was railing against the right-wing media — including Fox News and Rush Limbaugh — when he reminded a crowd in Burlington, Iowa, that his wife stood up to Coulter in a public spat earlier this summer.

“We know these people. We know their game plan. They’re going to attack us personally,” Edwards said. “They attacked Elizabeth personally, because she stood up to that she-devil Ann Coulter.

Now, after this he immediately said “I should not have name-called,” but as I see it that is too little too late.

  1. Chris says:

Pretty mild compared to the hate speech we hear from Coulter.

  2. Of course it’s too little, too late. A Democrat did it. While Michael is willing to criticize Republicans on the Iraq War, otherwise he despises the “flawed” American liberals. Frankly, IMO, Michael is a young man who’s bought whole hog into an ideology and doesn’t have a clue what it really means. Coulter is on the right side so he isn’t about to point out her flaws even if he’s aware of them.

  3. Jim: LMAO. I have criticized Coulter in the past and… you seemingly either do not read my posts, or…well I wouldn’t want to attack your person now would i.

  4. Sorry, you’re right about having criticized Coulter. OTOH, calling for Edwards to be perfect somehow seems petty. But it also doesn’t change my opinion of your comments about liberals on your own site where you agree completely with Jason when he shows the hypocrisy in his claims that the only reason he takes the right wing’s side so much here is because of it being a liberal web site.

  5. He didn’t call this a lefty website at all. Read his comment again. He called Chris a “lefty” which is true.

  6. He has written before on this web site that the reason his posts here slant fairly consistently to the right is because of the preponderance of left wingers here. In addition he made the more general claim of

I continue to be mystified why so many lefties continually emulate what they claim to despise.

  7. “I continue to be mystified why so many lefties continually emulate what they claim to despise.”

    That’s true.

As for the other comment, he didn’t make that in the comment section at the post i link to. I agreed with the comment he left there, not with every comment he ever made. In other words: your interpretation is a bit creative.

    Or should I say liberal?

  8. The sentence you are misinterpreting is this one

But it also doesn’t change my opinion of your comments about liberals on your own site where you agree completely with Jason when he shows the hypocrisy in his claims that the only reason he takes the right wing’s side so much here is because of it being a liberal web site.

What it says is that you agree with the statement Jason makes on your blog. It also says that the statement he made shows his hypocrisy when he claims he is not right wing, that he only posts things against liberals in places where they dominate in his opinion. Because it is also true that I have never seen anyone who wasn’t sneering at liberals call them lefties. Ever.

  9. Jason Steck says:

Jim, I wasn’t sneering at all leftists. I was criticizing some of them.

And that is an interesting double-bind that you and Chris seem to have constructed here. You and others who share your hostility towards conservatives are allowed to say just about anything in the pursuit of that ideology and if anyone complains, they are told that conservatives deserve it because some other conservatives (Bush, Cheney, Coulter, pick your favorite demon), but if anyone criticizes your side in ANY amount, that is “hypocrisy” or otherwise out of bounds.

Give it a rest. When the commenters on TMV start being fair to the righties and their arguments, then I might start to care about their complaints about criticisms coming their way. Put bluntly, I’ll put down my rhetorical gun when you all do. :)

Until then, if it makes you feel like you have scored points by crying “hypocrisy” every time your side takes a hit, well, have fun with that.

  10. Somehow I find your denial less than convincing.

This (instant) response on from a lefty was typical and, therefore, predictable: “Pretty mild compared to the hate speech we hear from Coulter.”

I continue to be mystified why so many lefties continually emulate what they claim to despise.

Let’s see…you call a response that you criticize harshly typical of “lefties” yet now you claim to only be criticizing some “leftists”. John Edwards makes one comment about Coulter and he is suddenly equivalent to her or trying to emulate her and her volumes of bile. CS says on Michael’s blog that none of you are trying to defend Coulter but what does it do when you paint someone as being just like her only on the other side when in fact it is a false comparison?

And if the readers and commenters at TMV are so pathetic and vile why do you stay here? Oh, you didn’t criticize all of them?

When the commenters on TMV start being fair to the righties and their arguments, then I might start to care about their complaints about criticisms coming their way.

But of course you weren’t criticizing all the the commenters, oh no. But why would you do that? Oh, yes. You once claimed that you just enjoyed taking the opposite position of any majority you found yourself in. But shouldn’t someone who is not simply a commenter but a moderator hold themselves to some kind of standard above enjoying insulting the commenters of the blog they moderate? But wait, you also criticize lefties on a conservative blog. But shouldn’t you be taking the liberal position on a conservative blog if that’s what drives you as you claimed? Gee, which position is the true one? Or is there one? Probably not.

shouldn’t someone who is not simply a commenter but a moderator hold themselves to some kind of standard above enjoying insulting the commenters of the blog they moderate?

You have a legitimate point here, Jim. I am obviously not accomplishing anything by participating in comments threads on TMV anyway, so I will endeavor to do so only rarely, if at all, in the future.

Thank you for making it so clear.

  12. You made a comment insulting every commenter on TMV. I criticize you for this, wondering why you should choose to moderate a group you look down on so much. You then go into a snit. Perhaps the reason you are accomplishing so little in the comment thread is your attitude towards the commenters. I notice you don’t address anything else I wrote which is all based on things you have said about what you claim is your method of choosing to critique comments.
