Thoughtful post (important topic).

1. Do we (individually or collectively) have a destiny, much less a political destiny? In these days that is a quaint notion but consider this: Some of our greatest leaders have been assassinated, and others have not been elected (many have never run). That tells you something, right there.

There is a famous saying, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". It's a principle of timing, and what we are ready on life's journey to digest. What I am trying to say, specific to the topic here, is how can the changes appear that are greater than will be supported by the citizen body?

Us.

2. What brings about real change? Laws are necessary but not sufficient, as the saying goes. As long as people have a less than noble aim in their hearts, they'll avoid or seek to change the laws - it will be warfare (character assassination, lobbyists, PR, campaign donations - there are many tools). Although some ink is spilt on "changing hearts and minds", we don't really understand what that means. If we did, and knew how to do that effectively, the world would be a much different place indeed.

We might not have wars in the first place, for one thing.
