Sorry to hijack(not) the thread, but the response to Webb's resolution and Lieberman's resolution is interesting. Back at the start of the year, Webb introduced S759 to address Iran. Well guess what, the bill is held up in comittee. Here is three good sites for bill tracking.
http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/110_SN_759.html
<blockquote>Latest Major Action: 3/5/2007: Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.</blockquote>

The results of Lieberman's resolution/amendment had a different fate. Here's some more decent political reference sites.

Senate Passes Lieberman's Iran Amendment

This afternoon, the Senate voted 97 to 0 to pass Senator Lieberman’s amendment on Iran (Amendment 2073) to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 1585).
Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Carl Levin (D-MI) called for unanimous consent on the amendment and became a co-sponsor himself, after Mr. Lieberman agreed to modifications that supposedly will include language to ensure that the amendment will not have appearances to authorize military force against Iran.</blockquote>

So much for a do nothing Congress, seems an "independent former Democrat" has more pull than a junior Senator from Virginia. How longer before hearings on WWE and steriods?

Bush will issue a signing statement of "I'm gonna attak them Iranian A-rabs anyway because Congress is on recess, and I'll do it on my daddy's speedboat to boot."

It would be military suicide at this point- and send conflict and violence in the entire area over the tipping point. Then again, he's got that Nazi sympathiser blood in him thanks to granddaddy Prescott B, so he might try to pull an Adolph, and try to fight on two fronts, which we all know worked out real well for Mr. Shecklegruber.

Entropy,
Didn't Congress already pass that bill officially blaming Iran for American deaths in Iraq?

At least on paper we are pulling carrier battle groups back, so hopefully that is correct and therefor there will be no more stupid wars.

However, if BushCo goes for the trifecta of stupid then I really can't imagine that we not have (even more) serious issues in Iraq. It woudl bet it will go to (a shia insurgent) land war, and probably fairly quickly at that.

An air and naval war is not out of the question (though I believe it's unlikely), but a ground war is. There simply are not the appropriate mix of forces available to invade Iran.

<blockquote>Today’s assignment is to explain whether Cheney and Company can be stopped, and if they cannot, what the public reaction would be.</blockquote>

That's easy. Congress would, barring some legitimate casus belli, not give the President the authorization to go to war.

Now, I know some in here will make the claim that the evil Bushco will do what he wants and attack anyway. I see little evidence for that, considering Afghanistan and OIF were authorized by Congress as were other things like EO's based off the Patriot act.

Two points on this one.

First, while even the Bush GWOT-Iraq critic Cordesman concedes to Iranian involvement in internal affairs in Iraq, the Iranians are "bad guests of Dawa and SCIRI. The Iraqis invited in the bad neighbors to the East, what would any strikes do to our friends in Shia militias and the Iraqis Mafia?
Second, the model for airstrikes (Lebanon) did work last year, how will "whack a Hezbelloh" work a second time? Where are those Israelis hostages/POW?

Hmmm, if it were anybody else I'd say it was impossible but with this crew....

I do agree with Somebody (once in a blue moon it happens) that the administration is not insane, and that we simply do not have the troops....BUT....I'm not very clear on the border between appalling short-sightedness and insanity. Maybe they actually believe that it could be done. You can make almost anything look pretty on a map, and if you are in an echo-chamber where there isn't anybody to tell you "are you F-ing nuts?!" with the full conviction that everyone on the outside "just doesn't get it" well....who knows.

Then again that pretty much sounds like insanity doesn't it?

I think I'd be more willing to believe they are evil than that they are insane. Mind you, when I say "they" I mean Bush, Cheney et. al, not "everyone that doesn't agree with me". I shouldn’t need to say that, but the way things are these days you can never be too cautious. Sure the war would be terrible for the nation, but it'd be great for certain companies; Halliburton, Blackwell and the like. I wouldn't be surprised if they saw war with Iran as just another business venture, a winning prospect when your bottom line ISN'T the wellbeing of the nation.

Tactical air strikes? That would escalate into a ground war pretty fast, wouldn't it?

I mean, we have 170,000 targets walking around in the country <em>right next to Iran</em>, don't we?

Nor would Bush get sufficient Republican congressional support this time around. The exception might be for tactical air strikes only.

This may be a rare day, but I actually agree with Somebody--I don't see where the troops would come from.

Though I confess, I'm not 100% sure something like that would stop them.

Just what exactly would we "Go into Iran" with???

We can barely keep troops in Iraq right now.
