I think in many ways, worldwide, we see how separation of church and state may be a completely sane idea. When I think of India, I think of one of the richest places on earth in terms of beauty, people, art all the way down to the littlest toe. And also, not yet enough education, not yet enough oppty . I still have hope Versamedi that people in India will rise. and continue to rise. Sometimes people think their hands are empty even though their minds are full of new life and new ideas. But, the satyagara movement is heritage in the blood of India, and many may have forgotten all this time later that satyagara is not only non-violence, but also sharp strategy and piercing symbolism, and full dress courage, and all in fullest public view... which is even more broadly available today than in the 1940s. I’ve heard right-wing radio talk show hosts criticize the “feminist movement,” NOW, etc for not being more vocal in regards to women’s rights in the Middle East. Usually the criticism is coming from a “look how hypocritical and ineffective and blind those groups are” motivation.

But I cannot help but think that if many of the societies in that region were more equitable to all citizens then peace would be more … forthcoming. And I *do* wonder why there hasn’t been more outcry here.

You can’t forcibly impose a different cultural environment — you get into weird colonial colonization & it wouldn’t be organic. I guess you can only really try to encourage individual empowerment and bless people like Taslima Nasrin.
