Better Racist Than Gay

Co-blogger Shaun already mentioned Florida State Senator Bob Allen’s (R) weird defense of his offer to give oral sex to an undercover cop (“He was big and Black!”). What I find odd is that Allen’s defense effectively boils down to “I’d rather be called racist than gay.” Again, I’m no optimist on race issues, but I still think that by and large, “racist” is more harmful to one’s reputation in American politics than gay is?

Kinda depends on your constituency, I think. Now I’d hate to live in the sort of place where being racist is more socially acceptable than being gay. What’s amazing is that the excuse is SO bad that now he’s shown himself to be racist AND gay, and I don’t think there’s a district in the US where THAT combo works well.

In America, yes, at least I hope so. But among Allen’s voting base, too? Imho that’s quite a difference, David.

Hehe, we think along the same lines, Lynx!

What does Kanye West’s ad hominem attack against Bush have to do with this topic? Bush is guilty of many things, but there’s no evidence that racism is one of them.

My guess is that he didn’t at the time even realize his views were racist, ingrained as they are.

LOL This incident brings up images of Deliverance and Faulkner’s Sanctuary. I picture Allen in drag as a cheap Temple Drake. The under cover cop asks him if he “sqeals like a pig”, but allen sqeals like a baby as he arrested by a “darkie”.
