GOP Hall of Closeted Pols Nominees

Time to ask yet again why it is that Republican politicians seem to get caught doing naughty things much more than Democrats?

That’s tough to answer, but two new cases appear to be examples of closeted gays in a party that officially loathes them.

The latest nominees to the GOP Hall of Closeted Pols are Glenn Murphy Jr. and Bob Allen, with a special kudo to Michael Flory, who has been nominated for entry into the Non-Consensual Sexual Assault wing of the hall.

Murphy is chairman of the Clark County (Iowa) Republican Party and recently elected president of the Young Republican National Federation.

On Tuesday, Murphy emailed a letter to media outlets announcing his resignation from both positions because of an unexpected business opportunity that would prohibit him from holding a partisan political office.

It appears that the “opportunity” is a Clark County Sheriff’s Department investigation into Murphy, who ended up at his sister’s house after he and a fellow Republican Party operative got drunk and allegedly engaged in non-consensual oral sex with him.

A local newspaper reports that the act was consensual and that Murphy is cooperating with authorities.

Meanwhile, Allen, a Florida State Representative and former John McCain co-chair in the Sunshine State, has come up with a novel defense after being caught trolling for a same-sex encounter at a Titusville park.

Police say that Allen solicited an undercover police officer and offered to perform oral sex for $20, while Allen claims he was just playing along because the officer and others in the park were . . . uh, large and intimidating black people.

More here.

Meanwhile meanwhile, Flory, the former head of the Michigan Federation of Young Republicans, will be sentenced next month after entering a guilty please to a charge that he sexually abused a colleague during a national convention in Cleveland.

The 32-year-old attorney from Jackson, Michigan, pleaded guilty to sexual battery on the day he was to stand trial for rape.

The teary-eyed college student he overpowered in a downtown hotel room gasped and dabbed her eyes as Flory replied to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Peter Corrigan’s question, “Are you indeed guilty?”

“Sure – yeah,” Flory said.

Today there have been posts on rape recantations, false claims about military misconduct, candidates using illegal aliens, Barry Bonds- pro or con, and now closeted gay Republican sex fiends.

A week or two ago, when all were in a tizzy of the non-story Pat Tillman story, I posited that the media obsession with such nonsense leads down dark corridors.

Well, reading, ‘It appears that the “opportunity” is a Clark County Sheriff’s Department investigation into Murphy, who ended up at his sister’s house after he and a fellow Republican Party operative got drunk and allegedly engaged in non-consensual oral sex with him,’ ‘Police say that Allen solicited an undercover police officer and offered to perform oral sex for $20, while Allen claims he was just playing along because the officer and others in the park were . . . uh, large and intimidating black people,’ and ‘“Are you indeed guilty?” “Sure – yeah,” Flory said.; seem to bear out my thesis.

Let’s see if some real news can dominate, not this Weekly World News level pap.

This keeps up someone is going to actually have to coin a phrase for when these hardcore “family values” demagoges get caught trolling for mangina. Some variation on schadenfraude seems perhaps?

  6. Sam says:

    I’ve got it! Schlongenfraude.

  7. Lynx says:

It sure SEEMS like they do much more of this stuff than democrats, but I think it’d require some serious research to be sure. After all, a sex scandal is much juicier if the culprit has a reputation for moralizing and grandstanding on “family values” and this is far more the field of the GOP. Still, it’s going to take Mit Romney getting caught licking caviar off the chest of an illegal immigrant 16 year old boy to top the Ted Haggard incident.

Of course, the full out homophobes are simply more likely to be Gay themselves. “Thou dost protest too much” is old, but holds true in many cases. There’s even a study that indicates that homophobia often disguises homosexuality.

Am I saying that all politicians who preach against homosexuality are gay? Of course not, most politicians who preach against homosexuality aren’t really homophobic I think, they just cinically play their base, and to hell with who gets hurt. But the true homophobes might have some teeny tiny inner voice that they want to shout down with all that rhetoric.

That said Shaun, you wouldn’t happen to know why the @#~@# my comment in Davids racial issues thread is constantly at the bottom and constantly making WordPress give a refusal when I try to comment there?

    Self-reflexiveness. ‘Tis a good thing.

I dunno about the thread problemo just as I don’t know why Republicans seem to be caught with their pants down more than Democrats since there is no reason why Dems shouldn’t be just as naughty. They probably just get drunk on cheaper stuff.

  10. Lynx says:

Shaun, the problem was fixed, finally.
I still think that it might just be that the GOP accumulates a higher number of the grandstanding-for-the-sake-of-hiding guys. Did you ever see American Beauty, the ex-military father? That sort.

  11. Rudi says:

I made a similar comment over at the other post, LOL I can’t resist the same here. These two and their stories bring to mind: Ned Beatty and Deliverance ; with Temple Drake and Sanctuary. But where’s the corn cob? ;-)

  12. Rudi says:

Shaun – In the old days a judge might say,”Young man what do you want? One year in jail or one year in VietnamBahgdada?” Sounds like a good choice for this fine upstanding Republican. Maybe Matt Sanchez could keep tabs on him.

  13. Mule Face says:

Well now, Shaun, a gay democrat is hardly newsworthy. A little Occam’s Razor for ya…..

  14. kritter says:

The GOP are forced to cater to the “values voters”, and repress their own sexual foibles while doing so. They know that they have to act like “Ozzie and Harriet” even though they have the same dark side as the Democrats. They can’t go the Barney Frank route- so turn to male prostitutes and pick-ups in gay bars. When the seedy truth all comes out, it inflames those that they previously were preaching to, and reveals that they are just as sinful as everyone else.
