Stories like this one from The Los Angeles Times make me want to throw up, tear my eyes out or something:
“In this long, hot campaign season, intimations of sexuality are sprouting like wildflowers along the road to the White House. Not that the commingling of sex and politics is anything new, but for what seems to be the first time in memory, voters are being confronted with questions that don’t usually break the surface: Just how sexy is a first lady allowed to be? And what constitutes an appropriate display of affection between candidates and their spouses?
“With a nominating field full of older men and younger wives, experts say that a youthful, even sexy wife offers a none-too-subtle message about the vitality of the candidate. . . .
‘What’s going on reflects what’s happening in the larger culture, a culture increasingly focused on young, attractive women and blatant sexuality, on display for all to appreciate,’ said Elizabeth Sherman, a political sociologist and Democrat who is married to former Republican Rep. Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma. ‘The candidate’s wife is a strategic asset. How are you going to deploy that asset?’ “

“I’m Voting For Fred Thompson ‘Cause His Wife Has Nice You Know Whats”
Shaun! I’m shocked! Now, why did Hilary go to the length of showing some cleavage when her targeted, uh, viewers, simply switch sides when another pair of, what you said above, come along? Really, what about Hillary’s, erh, things???
I’d like one reporter, just one, to have the nerve to ask the following question of Jeri:
“So, what was it about the millionaire Fred Thompson that first attracted you to him?”

Speaking as someone not too far in age from good ol’ Fred, the none-too-subtle message I get is that he will die in office. There’s no way he can do justice to both of those jobs without dying from exhaustion.
Yeh- even Dennis Kucinich did ok for himself-married to that gorgeous red-headed amazon!
More relevant to me is how much the motivation for running for the presidency is due to the candidate’s ambition, and how much is due to the wife’s ambition??? (several are rumored to be social-climbers)
“There’s no way he can do justice to both of those jobs without dying from exhaustion.”
Hmm. Well, maybe if at the office he’s only doing a slow job, he’ll save enough breath to give his wife a , uh, no, fuhgedabouthat…
Actually she’s ugly. No wonder she’s with a man old enough to be her father.
Unfortunately we have already had 6 years of Viagra based policy. I don’t think the country is really that excited about 4 more.
“Actually she’s ugly.”
Interesting opinion. Ok, I guess when men see such a cleavage, they don’t pay as much attention to the face anymore…
Well, I was a bit irritated that maybe Jeri Thompson in a different dress really wouldn’t look so attractive, so I googled for another picture of her:

Damn, I still think ‘ugly’ is a bit harsh and unfair, but she sure ain’t no beauty, really!
Gray,
That post was Internet humor at its best.
On a more serious note, Jeri Thompson is not a “trophy wife.” If anything, she is the mover and shaker behind the whole Thompson “campaign” up to this point. In fact, she’s been such a dominant player that she’s forced out some top political talent that didn’t agree with her. Now, I don’t have a problem with a woman serving as campaign chair for her husband. But I bet the party that belched over Hillary Clinton’s significant role in her husband’s Administration won’t look too kindly on another politicized wife.
