"I think that the various campaigns are saving their ammo for the time that they think it’ll be most useful."

100% correct imho, C, doma. That's why I think the reporting on Caroline isn't part of a campaign strategy, but simply another example of the luster of the media to regularly present some entertaining, juicy tidbits about V- and not-so-VIPs. I guess 'Slate' really needed to get more attention. When there's such a need for reporting 'scandals', the impact on the victims obviously isn't worthy of any consideration. I'm sorry for Caroline Giuliani for this violation of her private sphere (yup, I know the word is almost unknown in the US).

CS-
That is cynical, and very possibly true.
I hate politics for that very reason, that the worst suspicions so often turn out to be clairvoyant.

I'm a cynic, I guess, because I think that the various campaigns are saving their ammo for the time that they think it'll be most useful. I've no doubt that Giuliani's marriages and family issues will come out more than they already have, but at the time when his opponents feel it will damage him most. If the dirty laundry is aired too early in the campaign cycle (particularly with our new early, extended cycles), then there's a chance that the candidate being attacked will survive and the memories will fade by the time the election comes around.

So if one candidate or another isn't having much mud slung at him/her, I tend to think that these are actually the candidates that the opposing party is most concerned about and they're saving their ammo for when it counts.

I totally agree about children. I would even include spouses.
I was comparing how non-issues have been used to atttack some candidates, while Giuliani's public actions (not personal ones) from his years as mayor are just glanced at, not really questioned seriously.
He was outright arrogant with the black community, for instance. Other things - I'll let some blogger dig those up.

"In comparison to the scandals (cleavages and haircuts) the other candidates have had to endure, I’m really surprised at the kid glove treatment Giuliani is getting."

Right, doma! However, I feel quite uncomfortable when I see that his daughter's support of Obama becomes an issue. That's totally her business, and Rudi isn't involved in this at all. The ugly divorce should and will become a topic, sure, because it puts a spotlight on Giuliani's 'family values'. Shameful! But I hope those tough questions will only come when it's the going gets tough, i.e. after a possible Giuliani primary victory. No need to put the family unncessarily through this when there isn't an urgent interest of the public, yet.

In comparison to the scandals (cleavages and haircuts) the other candidates have had to endure, I'm really surprised at the kid glove treatment Giuliani is getting. His mayoral years contain fodder for many a nasty blog storm.and colorful background inserts in news stories.
I'm glad he's been spared, but I wonder why the coverage is so susceptible to partiality.

the real question should be" why after eight years of being Mayor of NYC could you not produce one public school good enough for your daughter to attend. Of course getting your daughter into a school that empahsizes their alumni on its homepage and refuses to release diveristy data is probably more important.

Come on, Joe, such a lengthy article about the political stance of Giuliani's daughter? Do you really think this tells us anything about the candidate? Plus, she'll be a victim of the media soon enough when Rudi's 'family values' become a topic. Don't you think she should be allowed a little breathing space before all hell breaks loose?

Thankfully, we haven't yet gotten to the point in politics where messing around with politicians children, even grown-up children, is considered correct. Unless a family member throws themselves into the public spotlight, it's the utmost in lack of tact to throw them in involuntarily. Most people understand this. When Alan Keyes was found to have kicked his daughter out when she came out as lesbian publicly he was brutalized by public opinion, even by hard conservatives. The public spotlight is a difficult place, no one should be forced to be in it against their will.

Yawn. Since when are children obligated to share the political beliefs of their parents? This is the the most worthless "news" story I've read all week.

This is hardly a surprise. Rudy is actually a liberal disguised in Republican clothing. It would be odd if his daughter actually described herself as conservative given her fathers leanings.
