No, seriously now, imho there have been remarkably few attempts of fingerpointing in the media, but also in the blogosphere, with only some ill advised bloggers trying to exploit the tradegy for political purposes (uh, sry, Shaun, but really…).
The general tone seems to be one of bewilderment and shock. There seems to be no general talking point that his could have been expected in any way, nor that the expection teams did sloppy work. Imho the public will finally come to the position that the US took to many chances by not doing enough for the proper maintenance of their infrastructure. At least I hope this will result in a discussion about higher spending for roads, tunnels and bridges and not be diverted into putting the blame on some poor scapegoat.
Many in the blogs and media have jumped on this as the BIG story. While their is some good analysis, much is just the “talking head” nonsense. Even the local officials are guilty of this. Yesterday I recall a small news conference with police and a recovery diver was shameless. For special affect, the diver stood there in full wetsuit and 30 pound weightbelt. This was unnecessary and absurd given yesterdays heat. As a former diver, I know that wearing this equipment away from and out of the water is insane. This was only done for the cameras. A better Fellini moment would require mask and flippers, maybe a bath brush or rubber duckie. News is now the “missing blond girl” 24/7.
