What’s really hilarious about Alaskans’ affection for Stevens’ ability to bring pork to their state is their self-image as rugged individualists and how they claim they vote Republican from a hatred of big government and welfare.

kritter, that’s what that said about Al D’Amato, but enough New Yorkers finally got tired of him to send him packing. And initially I think the state did suffer from his influential absence… But that said, you’re probably right. Can’t blame Alaskans for liking a guy who keeps that oft-forgot part of he country on the political map.

Don’t count on him being driven out unless they indict him. Stevens is incredibly popular with Alaskans. Why? For bringin’ home the bacon!

While I think both Stevens and Gravel are not quite normal, at least Gravel errs on the side of the good of the whole country- not just his own state.

Now, my practical rational self thinks that the possibility of Ted Stevens being pushed out of politics is a good thing, but then….

I feel sorry for the Daily Show.

He really is amazing to watch. Taken together with Mike Gravel, it makes you think that they make them a special kind of crazy, in Alaska.
