I’m going to play devil’s advocate.

I almost skipped reading this post, because I’m so tired of the uproars over this type of non-news.

It occured to ne to wonder, though, if everyone becomes so blase about it, might we not miss a ‘gotcha’ moment that is actually telling? A candidate could actually reveal something in an unguarded moment that is important for us to know and for him/her to hide.
Hmmm.

PS This in no way relates to the Romney blip.

It would be a better world if coverage of Presidential candidates stuck to serious issues, but there is a long tradition of jumping on trivia like this or John Edwards’ haircut to get some insight into character or judgment. Much of it is silly and even unfair, but there is a journalistic case to be made for it. For anyone with the patience and open-mindedness to consider it, it’s on my blog today:

This just goes to the “gotcha” politics of today. Bill Maher said it best when he said that we were judging politicians more on “brain farts” than on issues.

The sign was stupid, and holds the poetic appreciation of a 5th grader, but trying to stick it on Romney is about as childish. Yes it was politically dumb of him to take the picture, doubtlessly he hadn’t even read the sign. Excuse him for being human and fallible. The idea he endorses this is preposterous. I hope that the Obama camp has the grace to not grab onto it. Considering the attitude shown during the “magic negro” thing, I doubt they’ll make much of it.

Perhaps but that no relevance to what I said on this particular issue. I did not address that. I addressed the specific issue of this photo and the controversy over it. That doesn’t mean he has a pass on what he says during the campaign. Words do matter which is one reason why Romney turns off a lot of people. The record shows he has two sets of words on many issues (and I won’t be around today to comment in comments, so that’s it).
