A lot of Republicans are hoping that Fred Thompson makes a run for the presidential roses, but as British cartoonist Kal notes, American voters prefer hair on the presidential cranium.
Writing at Democracy In America, the U.S. blog of The Economist, Kal writes that:
“Not since 1956, when Dwight Eisenhower defeated an equally dome-headed Adlai Stevenson, has baldness prevailed in the presidential race. Since then America has been led by a succession of shampoo-users. One man to buck the trend was Gerald Ford, but he was appointed not elected to office in 1974.”
More here.
This is a good observation but I dont think you need hair when your wife looks like that! I hope Fred Thompson runs. I just listened to him on the radio talking about Iran and he is much more bloodthirsty than Giuliani. I want to vote for someone that will get us into a third war before the first two are done. Why can’t we get back to the good old days when the CIA death squads terrorized Iran, BP had a monopoly on all the oil, and innocent Iranian civilians were tortured and killed on a daily basis. Please run Fred, maybe as a bonus you have a patriot act 3 too?
Hair aside, Thompson does not stand a snowball’s chance in hell unless he runs away from Bush and Iraq — and fast.
Anyone who thinks that his recycled ideas and faux populism are a breath of fresh air for the GOP had better grab a gas mask.
Shaun (or better yet, Jason or Pete) who in the Republican party do you think stands, at present, a snowballs chance in hell? Both running and not running, do you see anyone in the GOP with the positions, the popularity and the means to make it to the presidency in ’08? I really don’t, realistically. I can see Romney getting the nomination but not the presidency. I can see Giuliani getting the presidency if he got past nominations, which I see difficult. Anyone?
From the Democrats, if Gore ran, he would nail it. If Obama got nominated, which looks tough though I hold out hope, he’d likely win. Hillary is the only big player I see capable of losing.
Lynx:
Republicans: Agreed.
Democrats” Agreed.
The only thng that matters in the 2008 election is whether the Democrats get 60 seats in the Senate or do they have to wait until 2010.
The Republicans will loose badly in the Presidential election in 2008 and the get routed in 2012. November 2012 will be when the media stops considering the Republicans a relevent political party and the U.S. becomes a defacto one party state.
Forget the hair.
Thompson won’t win cuz of the cancer.
Americans won’t vote for a potential William Henry Harrison.
What about Giuliani’s dome?
