Shooting in Colo. Gov. Ritter’s office; governor OK

Sounds as if the gunman was delusional:

MSNBC Breaking News: Spokesman: Gunman shot, killed in Colo. governor’s office; governor OK

AP via MSNBC:

DENVER – An unidentified man armed with a gun was shot and killed just outside Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter’s offices Monday, Ritter’s spokesman said. The governor was not injured, spokesman Evan Dreyer said.

The man was shot by a member of the governor’s security detail, Dreyer said.

The governor’s offices include a lobby and several other rooms. It was not immediately clear where either the governor or the gunman was at the time.

Dreyer said the man walked into the office and said, “I am the emperor and I’m here to take over city government.”

    Complete and total nutbar.

And to make it worse, he had to go and do it well before the afternoon rush hour, which means that he won’t even get a significant traffic jam to his honor.

But my question is, how the bloody thrice-damned hell did he get a weapon into the building in the first place? There is just the one active entrance to the building, and it comes complete with metal detectors and other standard security paraphernalia. (Speaking as a Denver-area resident here.) Someone here seriously dropped the ball, and heads are gonna roll for it.

It is easy in a situation like this to forget the tragedy of the circumstances of the individual who was killed by the Governor’s security team. No doubt the media will turn this into yet another field day for people who like to sensationalize events that involve persons with mental illness. The state of Colorado does an abysmal job treating and caring for persons with mental illness who are not insured or underinsured. My hope is the people of Colorado will use this tragic event as yet another demonstration of the cost to our state’s society to neglect people who are ill and need help.
