The Harriet Miers episode seemed like just another one thpse things, until I was reminded that even Nixon did nothing to prevent his lawyer John Dean from testifying when Congress was investigating his lovely mess. The comparison shook me up.
I realized how far our government had eroded.

Now the fear is about the next president. How will he/she build on these precedents?
I'm afraid that both branches of government have completely lost respect for the Constituion and for an honorable process in conducting the affairs of governent. Bush and Congress feed off each other to bring out the worst in both.

I always thought talk of impeachment was ludicrous, especitally during a war. Now I'd just like to know if Pelosi took impeachment off the table for political reasons or for Constitutional reasons. All of a sudden, the distinction seems important. Is anyone thinking about our system of government, or is it all the smoke and mirrors of politics?

There are so many gauntlets

That's not true only for Bush, but also for Congress.

It may be smart, but it only adds to their reputation for dishonesty and excess secrecy. When in our history has an executive been allowed to claim executive privilege for ex-employees? Also, since the WH claim is that they were not involved in any of the conversations about atty firings, how can Miers' role in the mess be privileged?

It's actually a smart move on the part of the White House.

They've nothing to lose; the congressional democrats are already out for blood, their poll number are already at or near historic lows and even the republicans are starting to turn. Meanwhile, it'll be weeks maybe months before Miers is compelled to even show up, at which point she can claim privledge and or forget.

At this point they're just trying to run out the clock.

I really hope I get to see this congress lay out some contempt charges. They really need to throw off the gloves.
