Some nights I listen to the Sean Hannity and Mark Levin radio talk shows. Levin says the war is going well, but the media refuse to tell us that. Hannity offers a somewhat–but only somewhat–milder version of the same argument.

I guess this is what the base wants to hear.

If The President stops saying things are improving in Iraq, he could lose the base. Thats’s after he’s already lost everyone else.

It’s almost unbelievable, but less spin and more frankness could end up pushing the President’s popularity even lower than it already is.

Its very clear that Bush no longer cares if he drives the Republican party off a cliff in his quest to preserve his legacy. Its obvious that he is only concerned with the judgment of history, and is hoping his reputation will be salvaged as Cold Warrior Harry Truman’s was.

He can’t stand the thought of Iraq going down in defeat during his term in office, but has no problem with the conflagration turning into a regional war for the next president, or with being the individual largely responsible for keeping his party out of power for the next generation. It seems incredibly self-absorbed to me. Too bad history’s verdict won’t come while Bush is still in office, so that he will realize that he won’t be vindicated after all. its a huge, reckless gamble.
