IMO, Americans just needed to be exposed to choices to get used to the idea of not having a white Christian middle-aged male. Once the choices were out there, it no longer seemed as unfamiliar or scary for us. This is a healthy trend, and it will be even healthier if Obama, Hillary or Richardson wins, because after their administration it will be more of a nonissue.

The Newsweek poll reflects a familiar tendency toward claiming “correct” attitudes for one’s self while projecting ambivalence and/or attributing prejudice to an anonymous “they.” To the extent that this gap is shrinking, it is good news for Clinton, Obama–and all Americans:

That’s been the case since the ‘06 election. Independents now realize that the right wing has a strong hold on the Republican Party, and that its moderates are a disappearing breed. My guess is that they probably still swing back and forth on state races, but allign with Democrats in national ones.

The polls showing that 74% of the country believes that we are going in the wrong direction- is key here because that number has to contain Democrats, many independents and even some moderate Republicans who are dsissatisfied with the present administration’s policies.

The fact that independents are overwhelmingly aligned with Democrats compared to Republicans on this issue, (presidential approval), should be a massive concern for Republicans and should be a bigger story.

I agree with Robert Bell. There are some obvious internal inconsistencies.

Also, things are still at a very theoretical stage.

I guess this goes along with “80 percent of people rate themselves above average drivers” …?
