Science defines mutualism, one form of symbiosis, as “an interaction between two or more species, where both derive benefit.†Think bees and flowers.
In putting the relationship of Ann Coulter and John Edwards under the microscope, another example seems more apt: the birds that eat parasites off crocodiles and are in turn protected from predators by their hosts’ giant jaws.
The gnashing of Coulter’s mandibles against him have not only nourished her notoriety (and lecture fees) but served as a fund-raising boon for Edwards.
When she called him a “faggot†in March, his campaign converted it into $300,000 in contributions. This week, when Elizabeth Edwards protested Coulter’s remark about wishing “he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot,” the fund-raisers went into high gear and raised more money than from any previous e-mail campaign.
So we have here another instance of Nature’s grand design, in which two victims of Reverse Attention Deficit Disorder serve to ease each other’s affliction.

Robert,
You are on the right track here, but I don’t think you take it far enough.
Coulter benefits from the exchange by selling books.
Edwards benefits from the exchange by raising contributions.
Chris Matthews benefits from the exchange by increasing viewership and ad revenue.
Robert Stein and The Moderate Voice benefits from the exchange by posting about it and stimulating interest in their blogs (and ads).
MW benefits from the exchange by commenting on the blog and siphoning traffic to his site to view a review of Coulter’s book Godless (and ads).
Not sure where the “eco-system” evolves from there, but it is clear that Anne Coulter is the krill of the MSM/Blogo-cology.
Edwards if far left. Having a far lefty on the ticket will inflict defeat to the Democratic party in 08. There is nothing unique about what she is trying to do.
Republicans are hoping and praying Edwards is the Democratic candidate in 08. Coulter is just trying to help this happen. Why else rationally would she be spending so much time picking on Edwards?
She knows that a Coulter badmouth translates to votes for Edwards.
Even if Coulter is trying to get people to switch to the ambulance-chaser from the two leaders (which I am not convinced is the case), she could behave better than she does. Oh, those like her on the right are a fraction far smaller than we have seen for ages on the left, and I’m not livid or Outraged! as an older, more childish PBS-watcher or NPR-listener might be. But she has little class and I certainly have tired of her attacks.
This page is interesting. Not only is she photographed with two better-dressed grade school girls, posing as the equivalent of Madonna as a role model (the girls are dressed much better than she is, and why would she appear that way at a grade school?), if you scroll down you will encounter the transcript of an attack by her on the 9-11 widows.
My highest compliments, Robert. Though I’m sure there are many times I don’t agree with you, you have now at least twice in the last couple of days struck me as a compelling writer, who knows how to use brevity as a magnificent sword.
Kudos.
