Fred Thompson’s secret weapon:
IN the battle for the women’s vote, Fred Thompson has a secret weapon against Hillary Clinton – the legions of former girlfriends who still adore him and who want him to be president.
The Hollywood actor and former Tennessee senator racked up an impressive list of conquests during his swinging bachelor days in the 1990s, but he appears to have achieved the impossible and kept their friendship and respect.
For those who wonder, yes, this is British humor.
Some of Thompson’s ex-girlfriends:
Lorrie Morgan, a country singer who dated Thompson and considered marrying him in the mid1990s, told The Sunday Times: “I couldn’t think of a bad word to say about Fred if somebody put a gun to my head.
“Fred is a perfect example of chivalry. He’s the kind of man little girls dream about marrying, who opens doors for you, lights your cigarettes, helps you on with your coat, buys wonderful gifts. It’s every woman’s fantasy.†Thompson, who wooed Baroness Thatcher during a visit to London last week, is expected to announce officially next month that he is running for president. He is already challenging Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, for first place in polls of likely Republican voters.

One of her rivals for his affection was Margaret Carlson, now a columnist for Bloomberg News, but she has also joined in the praise for Thompson. “He’s handsome, he’s charming, he sounds like a president,†Carlson gushed recently. “He’s smart, he’s articulate, he knows his line, he can hit his mark.â€
Morgan: “I think he has a great chance of capturing the women’s vote. He’s majestic. He’s a soft, safe place to be and that could be Fred’s ticket. Women love a soft place to lay and a strong pair of hands to hold us.”
Geogette Mosbacher, a Republican fundraiser who once dated Thompson as well: “[He will appeal to] traditional women who will like the Southern gentleman in him. Another thing that is extremely attractive about Fred is that he is a really good listener. As a woman you can talk to Fred about any subject and know that you’re getting someone who respects your opinion and isn’t just being polite.”

Sarah Knestrick, whom he married in Tennessee at 17 and divorced 26 years later, intends to campaign for Thompson.
Fred’s campaign slogan: Vote Fred, Vote Soft and Safe.

Pathetic!!!
First of all he’s most definitely NOT handsome. Secondly, I don’t know who these bizarre women are, but I can tell you Fred Thompson is not someone I would fantasize about. Now he made be a perfectly nice man, and he certainly is smart, perhaps he would even make a fine president, but call me shallow, but I just don’t see him as an object of fantasy.
Now, as a woman I find this statement offensive and most of all nauseating. It seems to me that this Morgan person is looking for a father figure. She should speak for herself and other weak, pathetic women who are obviously in need of a “daddy” to protect them . She shouldn’t claim to speak for all women.
Bedfellows make strange politics. Even Henry Kissinger, when he was in the White House, dated starlets and was considered a sex symbol:

What does it say about politics in this country that so many people apparently think that we are too stupid and irrational to actually vote on where the candidates stand on the issues?
So, he’s a southern good ‘ol boy with nice manners- what does that have to do with being a good president and dealing with many pressing problems that defy solutions? In 2000 we elected a southern good ol boy with bad manners, but who was great fun to have a beer with.
I don’t see Fred Thompson as a visionary who can move us into the future.
And this is the extent of Fred Thompson’s appeal. He “looks” like a decent guy and plays a tough one on TV. On the substantive issues of the day he offers more of the same. He is the George W. Bush candidate, which is why the GOP base is getting excited about him. They’ll soon find out that the non-GOP base (77% of America) doesn’t find him appealing after 8 years of Bush. As a Dem, I say, “Bring him on.”
Fred Thompson’s Secret Weapon
It is beginning to appear that Fred Thompson is quite a hit with the ladies. The girls I know like him too.
Elrod makes a point I forgot to mention. Isn’t being a Southern nice guy who seems like a “good, honest person” what got GWB elected? And we can see where that got us.
I vomited a little after reading the post.
So this is Thompsons strategy? He was such a nice guy his ex-girlfriends/wife are still friends with him? And how does that equate to running a country? Is he going to date all the foreign leaders or something?
The guy hasn’t said a single thing about how he’d run the country, and we are getting this kind of drivel as pre-campaign propoganda. Makes me think so much more of him as a leader now (mega-sarcasm).
I sort of agree with Elrod- the guy would probably be an easy target for the Democrats in ’08, as the country seems primed for a change candidate. The reason Thompson won’t win is the very reason that he is so popular among Conservatives. I think they would do much better to run Rudy, who is a more powerful presence and who could attract many independents and even some Democrats who don’t want Hillary.
The next presidential election cycle will not be happening in a vacuum. We are moving into “interesting times”, to quote the Chinese proverb. The ongoing pressure by Bush and
Kennedy to push a “comprehensive immigration reform bill” is very unattractive to about 3/4 of
the american people. And that is without most people seriously thinking about its long term
implications. It has the potential to bring down
popular social infrastructure like Social Security.
It will grant preferential status to the 20 million
who are likely here, in terms of education, social
services, etc.
Fred Thompson was the first top tier “candidate”
to strongly oppose the Kennedy/Bush “amnesty”.
As time goes on, the issue will began to undermine
others, like it so quickly did, John McCaine. The presence of 90 million more undereducated folks
from third world Latin America, will swing us far left, and cut the adjusted average income by at least a third. If hospitals are closing now, and school bonds are a hard sell…wait for the 400 million population benchmark. Even health
can be impacted as more communicable disease
is “muled north” along with the drugs and people.
Short of an astroid projected to impact the earth ,
or a full on return to the cold war, there is nothing
less promosing than a policy to have 400 million living here in 15 years. I think the advantage that
the Dems now have will evaporate if a moderate
credible person like Thompson picks up the flag,
and says “follow me”…” we’ve got a nation to turn around”. The borders must be brought under ten
times better control, than Clinton or Bush saw fit
to accomplish. The association of the Clintons with the failed border policy, will put a pin in
her credibility balloon, as Fred Thompson makes his case for effective borders, and sensible immigration & and citizenship policy.
