The GOP’s problem is they don’t have any candidates that are worth a damn. They seem confused, every other week there is a new “Frontrunner” while the primary voters seem to have a collective amnesia attack about the awful record of said frontrunner, he takes the lead until all of a sudden they remember well known facts about what a jackass he is, then they tack back to another candidate who is no better. I have never seen a race like this.
Voting in the GOP primary is like trying on what turns out to be dirty underwear. It looks good when you try it on, but then once you take a closer look you realize it’s dirty, so you go to another candidate. Uh… I mean another pair of underwear.
I don’t know if Gingrich could overcome his unfavorable image. He seems totally unable to play nice for literally more than a few days at a time.
What’s really bizarre is that it was the conservatives in the party who forced him out of the House Speakership, not because of any moral transgressions on his part but because of his compromises with Clinton, his behaving as if the Speaker of the House was somehow obligated and had some responsibility to help run the country. There were even whispers that he was a moderate.
He always a partisan Republican but I never thought of him as a committed social conservative. He seemed to understand that the social issues were a way to get people to vote Republican who would be screwed by the party’s economic policies. Part of the Republicans’ problems seems to come from a leadership that increasingly doesn’t understand this and don’t know, for example, that recriminalizing abortions, this time as a capital crime while outlawing contraception, is not going to be all that popular when the conservative majority on the Supreme Court finally overturns Roe v. Wade.
I don’t know Stockboy, the 2008 race was pretty rough, but they all are. I thought ’08 was loaded with solid options. McCain, Clinton, Obama, even Romney seemed not too bad back then. I could have lived with, if not voted for, any of them. Right now I shudder to think of any of the GOP candidates other than Huntsman getting to the Oval Office. And obviously Huntsman is out and was never really in. Not one of the candidates today are planning on doing anything other than doubling down on the Bush era policies that tanked this nation. Domestically they want to save the wealthy and bleat endlessly about how much they love America and “American Values”, and internationally they want to run roughshod over anyone who denies our right to do whatever the hell we want. Its scary.
“What is amazing, is that so many of these people believe that their warped and deficient candidates can actually defeat President Obama. ”
It goes deeper than that. They believe that their candidates are not only going to handily defeat Obama, they believe that – had any of these people been President the last 3 years – the economy would be going gangbusters, the middle class would be growing again, and the world would once again bow at our feet thanks to a few well-placed invasions.
I would love to get a psychiatrist’s opinion of Newt. I looked up narcissistic personality disorder and he exhibits quite a few of the symptoms — grandiose ideas, need for special treatment, gets angry out of proportion to the offense, unable to exhibit true empathy for others, poor longterm relationships… just to name a few. That’s probably why he always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.
I don’t think Huntsman was rabid enough for the Limbaugh crowd. These days the candidates have to be foaming at the mouth or the GOP just labels them RINOS!
I gotta laugh, if the Reps are guilty of rating their candidates on a rabidity scale (RC), then what did the Dems do? They passed by much more experienced candidates (Clinton, et al) and on a, what, fairy-tale scale (FC), popped in Obama.
I not quibbling on the after effects, just the contrast in the style of selecting the final candidate. Just sayin.
cjack– there is a lot of ODS out there, lots of people who blame him for our economic woes especially unemployment and the housing mess. I wonder if they even notice what the opposition party in Congress has done about either of these problems, or what the candidates for the GOP nomination plan to do.

Newt’s boring drones is bound to grow tiresome to even his most ardent supporters by mid summer. I mean four years of that? Really?

dduck:
Amazingly, you and I agree on that point. Thanks
It’s a start…………

The Republican Party’s Gingrich Payoff
One wonders why the “elite” are so down on Newt. His tax policies are, well, terrific – for them, according to Steve Rattner.

Because he doesn’t have as good a chance of getting elected as Mitt.
Gingrich’s plans wave a red flag in front of every voter.
