Tough, and Realistic, Standards on Auto Emissions

Every now and then I like to publish a guest post: either by blogreaders, other bloggers or experts in their own field (whatever field that may be). A couple of days ago, I published a post about John Kerry’s proposal about energy, fuel efficiency, global warming, etc. After publishing it, I came in contact with the so-called “Auto Alliance” who support the Pryor-Bond-Levin-Voinovich Amendment. Today, I am happy to announce that Charlie Territo, Director of Communications for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, agreed to write a guest post for this blog about before mentioned amendment.

By 2015, the amendment requires each manufacturer to produce and sell 50 percent advanced technology vehicles, such as hybrids or clean diesel, or flex fuel autos.

Are you saying that someone actually believes it’s possible to legislate that 50 per cent of production of sales of vehicles will be new, alternative types?

Have you sought legislation as well that reduces the number of annual cloudy days by fifty per cent in Seattle?

This reminds me of one those poltical speeches making the most preposterous claims and ending with ‘it’s what the American people want’.
No matter how much they claim to care aboutr jobs and reducing global warming, this proposal is still designed to hamper efforts at increased fuel economy. If they can’t compete with foreign companies who have the forsight to invest in new technologies, Congress has no business helping them remain uncompetitive.

CEOs, investors and consumers alike at some point have to decide whether or not they want to stay with heads buried firmly in the sand. Setting high standards risks not being able to completely meet them. Not setting high standars guarantees that you won’t
