Huckabee: ‘Most’ Prisoners In The U.S. ‘Would Love’ To Be In Guantanamo

Mike Huckabee is one of my favorite Republican candidates: sure, I do not agree with him on everything, he’s too socially conservative for my taste, but he sounds like a reasonable man, who knows what he is talking about.

Now, however, he said something quite stupid:

I know it’s become a symbol of what’s wrong. I visited Guantanamo just about a year ago. My sense was, because I visited every single prison in the Arkansas prison system, and I can tell you most of our prisoners would love to be in a facility more like Guantanamo and less like the state prisons that people are in in the United States.

That’s probably because they get sick and tired of having their lawyers around all day long huh (a problem the prisoners at Gitmo don’t have)?

Unfortunately, Huckabee has realized he has no hope of striking up interest in his campaign unless he makes these kinds of comments, which appeal to the Republican base. You can hear those kinds of remarks over and over on Conservative talk radio, which in my mind has done its part to coarsen our culture. According to its hosts, the inmates at Gitmo have never had it so good.

Says a lot for the Arkansas prison system.

Закройте тюрьму в Гуантанамо? Восстановите Колыму!

    They’re lucky.

From the standpoint that the cells are new, the medical faculties modern, the fact that the cell tract Huckabee visited never actually had prisoners… I can understand his saying that.

One minor difference, that an Arkansas prisoner might know how long they will serve, was already aluded to by Michael.

The other difference is that most prisoners in Arkansas haven’t been submitted to “extreme” interrogation methods for months and years.

Perhaps Huckabee would like to take a vacation from politics and prove just the “holiday in paradise” nature of Guantanamo?
