Today is the birthday of Lt. William Calley, perpetrator of the My Lai massacre.
Convicted of pre-meditated murder in a slaughter that claimed over 500 lives, Calley served 3 years of his life sentence, less than 5 months of which was in prison, before being paroled.
I was in the military when the Mai Lai massacre occured. I was very anti Viet Nam war but had mixed fillings Lt. William Calley. I was never in Viet Nam but worked with and knew many who were. I know that many of them justifiably saw the Vietnamese people at the enemy – you never knew who was going to try to kill you. The result of that constant stress will result in “war crimes” and atrocities. My feeling always was the guilty parties were siting in Washington DC – the ones who put the LT Calleys in that situation.
Calley was actually a “neighbor” of mine during his house arrest. My at-the-time girlfreind’s father sat on his court martial jury.
I was maybe 12, but I remember that even in that environment Calley was massively controversial, as you might guess.
I think we all have been tainted by Mai Lai – the people who supported the war, the people who perpetuated the fighting because we had to have “victory” the people who were against it but did nothing – in short, the same simple minded sheep who are making it happen all over again.
