Don't forget the return of "free" day care for all someday.

It doesn't matter what provisions are put into the bill, if the federal govt refuses to enforce them, the bill will be worthless. That was pretty much the problem with the 1986 bill- employers were never sanctioned for hiring illegals because of the influence of big business on local, state, and federal enforcement agencies. If corporations want cheap labor, they won't fulfill the provision that dictates that they only hire illegals when they can't get American workers.

Its really just total hypocrisy on the part of everyone involved. Just as the troops have become pawns in war legislation, the illegals have become pawns in this legislation. Just another sign that the government can't respond to real problems because of the influence of special interests. (we are also seeing this in any legislation that is meant to cut emissions or increase fuel economy) Read "The Broken Branch" by Mann and Ornstein to find out what is wrong with Congress.

Pacatrue,

I think at least some of the Republicans had to vote against the immigration bill on principle. If the Democrats want to turn the U.S. into a third world country, they should do it on their own and without Republican help.

I am amaze that what Democrats are willing to do to add 12 million Democratic voters to the roles. How are the future Democrats planning on having national health care, college for all, and smart growth while supporting open borders and unlimited immigration? Of course, no one in the media will ask Clinton, Obama, or Edwards how they plan to reconcile their positions on immigration and increasing the social welfare state.

Something that enforcement-only advocates will also have to worry about is whether the bill will get worse, from their perspective, in 2009 if a Democratic President wins. Of course, that is far from certain, and it's also not certain that Democrats will continue controlling the Senate, but it is a possibility, and it could mean they will look back on rejecting the compromise as a mistake in a couple years.
