Well maybe if they ever found the 5 million missing e-mails, we'd finally know what went on at justice lol. Nothing to see here folks! I've heard that the emails were erased because they contained information about how Bush "won" Ohio in 2004. All their secrecy just makes me more curious.

Some people think with Gonzales' DOJ in meltdown mode they're no longer able to protect/slowwalk Repubs from these investigations and indictments. Not all of them are as dumb and blatant as the Duke but a lot of them are just as crooked.

We'll have to see. There was a flurry of raids, Renzi, Doolittle etc. over a two week period but then it petered out.

Boehner may have convinced Lewis not to seek another term if the Justice Dept is close to seeking an indictment. He knows the GOP will have no chance at all to win back the House if Lewis is indicted while in office for the Cunningham mess. I think they are trying to catch these problems before they become national news. But I'm sure he'll make the most of Jefferson's indictment.

From his bio:

"Jefferson is an active and senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittee on Trade. He is also a member of the House Committee on the Budget."

You’ll notice it doesn’t say he’s chairman of the Ways and Means Committee or the House Committee on the Budget. You know why that is? Because last year when the FBI raided hs office Pelosi stripped him of his leadership positions.

The Democratic party did it's best to oust him in the primary and run off elections but the people down there don’t much trust outsiders telling them who to elect I guess.

Contrast that with Denny Hastert’s shrieking over the raid on Jefferson’s office and his years’ long cover up of Mark Foley’s scandals. And how about Boehner appointing Ken Calvert to the Appropriations’ Committee when John Doolittle had to step down pending his indictment? Turns out the FBI is delving into Calvert’s records too. Jerry Lewis, House Appropriations ranking member is not long for congress either.

If you’re keeping score at home here's some info for you:

Congress.Org Jefferson's Power Rank Standings

Power Ranking: 439
Power Score: -2.50
Rank in Chamber: 439
Rank in State: 7
Rank in Party: 237
Rank in Class of 1990: 19
Past Power Rankings
2005 Rankings: 412 2006 Rankings: 436

Man he's last in the party and the entire chamber! This guy not only has less pull than any Democrat or Republican but with a -2.50 power rating he could probably cause your bill to spontaneously burst into flames by glancing approvingly at it!

Compare that to 4th ranking Repub Jerry Lewis Power Rank Standings

Power Ranking: 118
Power Score: 19.53
Rank in Chamber: 118
Rank in State: 19
Rank in Party: 4
Rank in Class of 1978: 1

Lewis is probably going to retire next year before he's indicted in the Duke Cunningham - DOD scandal. Like the disgraced traitor Duke - and that's what people who bilk the national security apparatus of the US ought to be considered - Lewis is going to find out that resigning doesn't make much difference to honest feds (but who knows how many of those are left in Gonzales's DOJ?) when it comes to felony charges.

And yet there sits Lewis as ranking minority member on the Appropriations Committee. 4th most powerful Repub and 118th most powerful member in the House.

Why doesn't Boehner force him to step down? LOL, have you seen the Republican House caucus? Replacing Jesse James with Billy the Kid isn't going to curb crime in Dodge City.

"will not seek another term in Congress"

Americans want term limits! Meanwhile, those in Congress and elsewhere, including so many so-called 1994 "revolutionaries," want to stay in Washington forever.

When someone leaves, the answer is why? "It's no fun any more" is no excuse. Either the guy won't last for some legal reason, or he just wants to become a lobbyist and start enjoying the big money with a number of other former members of Congress and other office holders in Washington.

As I told people in 1992, during riots in LA and elsewhere, what should have been struck is K Street.

"Maybe his punishment should be to go do some hard-labor in Alaska?"

Unfortunately, our buddy Bruno (the Bear -- Russia, run by Vladimir Putin now, and probably later as well) isn't in top form, otherwise he'd restore or let us restore and use Kolyma. (for Jefferson, for terrorists, for others)

(Why hasn't Putin restored the GULAG system yet, by the way? Is he really facing that much dysfunctionality at home?)

"I have no qualms about saying that now-indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) should be expelled"

Even though he's a Democrat, and even though you felt you should say you have no qualms, as if your stance had to be defended? heh

It really is an embarassment for the whole country to have a known crook sitting in Congress.
Some way to oust him will be found, I hope.

Abput the district that re-elected him, I don't know what to say. Some people just like to be duped, I guess.

What's sad is that the voters of Lousianna's 2nd Congressional District re-elected this crook last fall by a margin of 57% to 43% during the run-off between him and fellow Democrat Karen Carter.

According to wikipedia:

Political commentators predicted an easy victory for Carter on the second ballot (to be held on December 9, 2006). In the last week of campaign however, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee, a law and order Democrat who wields tremendous influence in his parish, urged voters not to vote for Carter. In response to Carter's criticism of Gretna police officers and Jefferson Parish deputies, who blocked the Crescent City Connection and prevented evacuees from fleeing New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina, Lee mailed out 25,000 flyers and made public statements attacking Carter.

Lee’s efforts to defeat Carter were successful. White voters from Jefferson Parish, a group that had not shown much enthusiasm for Bill Jefferson’s reelection on the first ballot, stayed home rather than vote against him. Voter turnout dwindled from 24.15% to 16.25%. While residents of the city of New Orleans gave Jefferson a slight majority over Carter, (51% to 49%), the Jefferson Parish share of the district voted for Jefferson by a staggering 71% to 29%, clearly swinging the election in his favor.

And this was several months after Jefferson had been implicated by one of fomer aides and stripped of his committee membership on the Ways and Means Committee!

What does is it going take to convince voters to get rid of their crooked congressmen?

I hope Pelosi pressures him to resign from the House or at least strips his committee seat on Homeland Security. The people of NO deserve better, even if they were stupid enough to vote him back in.

Egads Chris! Are you INSANE? Actually PUNISHING white collar criminals? Perish the thought. Of course, if Jefferson had been stupid enough to steal $1000 at the local corner store and happened to be poor, then naturally he'd be punished, but the more you steal, the less likely you are to be actually punished. Martha Stewart went to Camp Cupcake, I wonder where Jefferson will go, Camp Cub Scout?

He should be rebuilding homes in New Orleans, since he is supposed to represent that city.

Oh and a side note: I find very disheartening that he would win his district despite his obvious corruption. Are people even awake?

This is unreal.
A few days ago, Tonya Bell drove her car with broken windows and flat tires into a festival in DC, hitting 40 people. The CHILD in her car was immediately taken into protection.
