Why presume there has to be an answer?
I think the question echoes the sentiments of people in the wake of a tragedy.  Why?
What it implies is that the asker wants an answer that would make him feel better.  Many answers respond to that need, and people choose the one that suits them.
 
Those who accept that God is a mystery impossible to box into simple human concepts can also accetp that 
life itself can be undefinable.  It is, in the end, what you choose to meake of it.</description>
