The race for the White House definitely needs some more buffoons like Thompson to spice up the joke that is American democracy.

How many days do we give him before he promises to triple the size of Guantanamo and start waterboarding those wimpy Democrats?

  2. Pete Abel says:

    Chris,

My guess is he won’t do that until after July 4. :-)

  3. casualobserver says:

Hey, Chris, I heard Kucinich is accepting the Fox debate invite.

How do you plan to navigate that viewing conundrum?

  4. Chris says:

    co,
I watch FOX “News” now and then. I used to watch O’Reilly 5 times a week.

It’s fascinating that so many Americans swallow such blatant propaganda. It certainly diminishes my hope for return to a functioning democracy with well informed citizenry.

Can we please have a president that isn’t from a former slave-state?

  6. C Stanley says:

    CaptainComeback,
By that logic, shouldn’t we also specify that he/she shouldn’t be from the former slave party? ;-)

You’ve more patience than I have.

Can we please have a president that isn’t from a former slave-state?

I’ll settle for one presidential ballot in my adult voting lifetime that does NOT have a Bush or a Clinton anywhere on it. Just once, please? Pretty please?

(The last ballot to meet that requirement was in 1976.)

I concur, but I would also like the nation to be headed by someone who doesn’t brim with southern ethos. You hear culture warriors speak in code about ‘coastal & city elites’, but at the end of the day, those elites generate most of the prosperity, tax revenue and intellect. If they wanted to split off again, I say go ahead, Memphis would be the only noteworthy loss. And yes C Stanley, I am aware that the contemporary parties and their platforms have realigned quite a bit in the past 150 years.

  9. kritter says:

Thompson may be popular with Conservatives, but I doubt he is electable. He is in remission for cancer, and I doubt the country is ready for another Conservative Republican from the South, who is a war hawk like Bush.

  10. CaptainComeback says:

I should add that I’ve always liked his character on the original Law and Order. Very astute and pragmatic – but I’m not sure that was the kind of politician he is, only the character.

  11. kritter says:

That’s the problem with electing an actor- you don’t know who the real person is. I’ve heard that Thompson is very different from his character. People should look at his record in the Senate instead.

    Touche, C Stanley.

Hey, Chris, I heard Kucinich is accepting the Fox debate invite.

Kucinich has more moxy than the rest of the Democratic candidates combined (with the exception of former Senator Mike Gravel). I give Kucinich credit for criticizing his fellow Democrats for pertuating the war. I also give him credit for his willingness to go onto Fox News and debate before a hostile audience (not to mention a hostile panel of moderators).

Still, Fox News has become mired in its own pro-war propoganda. The way Karl Cameron and Sean Hannity distorted Ron Paul’s remarks after the last debate was disgusting. If Fox News correspondents are willing to distort the words of an anti-war Republican for political gain, just think of what they’ll do to the words of anti-war Democrats.

  13. Pyst says:

Thompson is another stuffed suit fake, (infact an actor to boot) auditioning for the newest version of american idolworship known as “Who want’s to be the next Ronald Reagan”. And Reagan wasn’t even” Reagan”, the man was a myth created by the political spin machine of mediocracy that is now the average american media outlet.

  14. PYST: the comment as you left it has the kind of personal attack we really would like to avoid. Your comment is actually a good point if you cut that paragraph out and I’m removing it. The reason is that when this kind of thing starts it escalates. Please just check our posting guidelines below. Your comment above actually is stronger and more compelling by removing the first paragraph.

I don’t know about moxie, but he must have some transcendental mojo to snare Mrs. Kucinich. http://kucinich.us/files/images/DK%20&%20EJK%202.preview.JPG

Not since Tiny Tim married Miss Vickie have I felt so optimistic about my own chances.

Can we please have a president that isn’t from a former slave-state?

Each of the original 13 states had slavery. The Northern ones only abolished it at the end of the 18th century.

Tennessee is probably the most marginal Confederate state because the Eastern portion (where I now live) militantly supported the Union and had little slavery. Moreover, Tennessee was occupied by Union troops just 9 months after seceding. Thompson is originally from Alabama and set up his political career in Lawrenceburg, which is the in lower Middle Tennessee. That part of the state was decidedly pro-Confederate. But that has nothing to do with why Fred Thompson would make a terrible president. His ideas about how to fix the country are what’s wrong. Recycled Reaganisms with neocon foreign policy just doesn’t sound like a real winner in 2008.

  17. kritter says:

I agree with you Pyst. The GOP can’t deal with the fact that their foreign policies have failed and have left our military and country in a weakened state- when national security is usually the party’s strength. They have no new ideas to go into the future with, so they are reaching back to their glory days in the ’80′s.

But they can’t resurrect Reagan, and anyone who cannot govern as themselves is doomed to failure. Bush was originally said to be the next Reagan, and modelled himself after Reagan’s presidency. But because he was faking it, the attempt was a disaster, and now even Republicans are saying he is much more like Jimmy Carter (which is an insult to Carter who did not do the lasting damage that this president has done and had some solid achievements).

Maybe so Joe, but I bet the comment you cut was 100% true as well.
