Mexican Audience Boos Miss USA During Miss Universe Pageant Won by Miss Japan

Mexicans don’t likey America no more:

Booed mercilessly at the Miss Universe pageant by a Mexican audience angry at U.S. immigration policy, and seen by millions of TV viewers as she slipped and fell on the pageant stage, Miss USA Rachel Smith nonetheless managed to take the high road and offer her Spanish-speaking hosts an enthusiastic, “Buenas noches Mexico. Muchas gracias!”

Smith, 22, from Clarksville, Tenn., who was crowned Miss USA last March, was continuously jeered by the mostly Mexican audience during the pageant’s interview phase.

Pageant spokeswoman Lark-Marie Anton told Miss USA not to feel bad about the booing. After all, the crowd hates America (her country), not her: “We believe it wasn’t Rachel being booed but the USA and some of our policies as a country. The booing was unfortunate, but Rachel represented the USA with style and grace. She was extremely dignified.”

This is a pretty weak post Michael. We want pictures!

    Oh, that’s ok then.

Don’t forget the soccer game in LA a few years ago.

I’m reminded of certain Phillies’ fans who always booed Mike Schmidt when he struck out more than once a game. But after the game ended, he was still the greatest third baseman of all time — and they were just a ragtag gang of drunks.

A ragtag bunch of drunks dominating the audience at a beauty pageant?

    That I’d like to see.

I don’t know mvdg… maybe. But, maybe not. Just my very two cent’s worth…

the talk I’ve heard from Latinas today here in the southwest, has a different supposition about motives underlying what happened at the event. Miss Smith is born in Panama. She is a ‘mixed’ race person. There might be ‘issues’ by some few in that particular ‘upper class’ audience in Mexico. I emphasize ‘might.’ Racism is too often rampant in Mexico. When I lived there people often wanted to know my bloodline et al. It bewildered me for many reasons.

I dont know enough about all the facets of what actually happened at this upper crust event to say too much more, only having read of it here… I am scanning to try to find any journalist who interviewed the ones who were making negative sounds. I think hearing from them would be valuable

I remember the LA soccer game (for those of you that don’t the US soccer team was booed off the field). This is just one more reason to subscribe to the “Love it or leave it” theory. I say build the wall soon!!!

  8. dr. e: fascinating, I didn’t know that racism is such an issue in Mexico. Aren’t all Mexicans a mixture?

  9. Rudi says:

MvdG I spent many months in Mexico. Some are a better mix than others. If your more white/Spannish your in the upper crust. If the mix is towards the indigenous groups your an untouchable.
