Mitt Romney’s Smart Move: Declines Participation in Trump Debate

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney seems to have finally broken his cycle of political unwinding and bad publicity with a move that will enhance his standing: he has declined participating in Donald Trumps debate. He says Trump — who can be seen these days with Newt virtually bowing down to him and acting as his virtual public relations person and with Gingrich asking about how could anyone POSSIBLY turn down a chance to “hang out” with Donald — didn’t take it personally. (Place your bets now on how long it takes Trump to blast Romney since Trump disses all who don’t kiss his ring).

Here’s the segment on Fox:

It’s obvious who was going to get Trump’s endorsement in the first place. Why would a candidate want to bother with a dog-and-pony show to earn a campaign stain?

Hopefully, those that don’t show, are ineligible for the mark of Trump.

    A gold star for Mitt…………….

    smart move indeed.

Now that 3 candidates have abstained, Romney, Paul, and huntstman– is there any point in having this debate at all?

Who will Newt debate against, really?

More importantly, how many candidates need to opt-out before this debate is abandoned as illegitimate? Would the news host turn their back on Trump?

  4. JSpencer says:

Hey, if Newt gets a chance to be in the limelight he won’t care who he is or isn’t debating. He’ll just go out there and happily pontificate. I’m kind of surprised the Romney camp actually figured out what a joke it was going to be.

  5. dduck says:

Newt is so egotistical, and chock full of facts and opinions, that I have no doubt he could debate himself exceedingly well.
He is a trained historian and used to exploring important stuff like the decline of The Roman Empire, the lead up to WWII, what happened to Judge Crater and Amelia Earhart, and the guy who wrote ” Your Pants Falling Down”, plus why reality shows are popular.

Newt & Trump together. There’s a brain trust.

What did Ross Perot say about that “giant sucking sound?”

  7. merkin says:

I don’t know, it might be worthwhile if the Donald is going tell the supplicants that don’t measure up to his high standards,”You’re fired.”

  8. The_Ohioan says:

What if they gave a debate and nobody came?

DD has it right. Newt can take several sides of any topic and make them all sound equally accetable. In fact he often does.

He can do his tour de force without any other candidate onstage, thank you very much.

    It is about Trump’s ratings.

His “reality” show was never about finding an “Apprentice.” I’m fairly certain of this because I knew one of the contestants. It was always about making a successful television show that:

    1. Got ratings and,

    2. Got Trump’s brand out in front of more people.

Perhaps Romney figured out that if he participated, he’d be competing with “The Donald” for attention, and the contest would be rigged against him.

As a side note, I’d like to point out that Trump never had anyone on the “Celebrity” Apprentice who was arguably a bigger celebrity than he was.

Rick Perry would grow somewhat in my estimation if he also declined

  11. bluebelle says:

It just might be worth watching for entertainment value alone– Trump moderating and Gingrich, Santorum (who is doing so poorly in the polls he has nothing to lose) and Bachmann.

“Rick Perry would grow somewhat in my estimation if he also declined”

Perry’s only chance for growth at this point would be if you planted the guy and watered him on a regular schedule

  13. ProfElwood says:

Bachmann hasn’t accepted the invitation, saying that it there’s some question about Trump’s objectivity. This is sounding less like a debate and more like a late-night talk show.

  14. dduck says:

Trump is the new P.T. Barnum of politics.
This show could be called The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Mickey, aka Gingrich, trying to stop his mouth from spewing ever increasing glib egotistical verbiage.
