He certainly could be among those effectively just pretending to run for the Presidency but positioning themselves to be VP eventually.

Vilsag at Agriculture? Yeech. First of all, why on earth is there still such a department, in 2007? Second, why do we want to see more corn-based-ethanol-use arm-twisting, not only to benefit ADM, but even possibly more effort at propping up a floor price of corn (through subsidies, tax money taken from us and given to corn farmers) to keep corn prices (and, as a result, feed prices, and food prices) high? (Ask the cattle raisers and even hog farmers in Iowa what they have to say about that. They pay more to feed their livestock but can't expect correspondingly high price increases once they sell those livestock.)

Yeech.

We, long a bi-coastal nation, don't need an "Interior" department any longer, either. arrgh

It's been a pretty open secret around this state that Vilsack would run for President, but wouldn't have the capital to make it. It's fairly common knowledge that he's looking for (at best) VP or (at worst) a cabinet post (most likely Interior or Ag). We've all known this since 2003, when he stated that he wouldn't run for re-election as Governor.

As a Vilsack observer for some time, I nominated him for Hillary's VP as soon as he dropped out. He would bring experience in managing a government, good judgment and decency to her ticket. See my posts on him:

Vilsack is a decent centrist type of guy- too decent to make it all the way through to the nomination-. He'd be so much better than Cheney, and wouldn't overshadow a prima donna like Hillary. I think he's a better choice than Richardson- who despite his achievements is terrible in person. I watched his appearance on Meet the Press, and he just seems like another politician who has their own version of the "truth" no matter what the facts say. If you go to the MSNBC site they have the interview online. He's a tad slimy for my taste, but I am a big Gore fan.
